*Homeland* is an American television series centered on counterterrorism and suspense, which premiered in 2011. The show is adapted from the Israeli series *Prisoners of War* and follows CIA officer Carrie Mathison as she navigates a series of intense and gripping counterterrorism missions. The series has received numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Awards.
In 2010, Showtime initially ordered a pilot episode for *Homeland*. The pilot was co-written by Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa, and Gideon Raff—the creator of the original Israeli series *Prisoners of War*—and directed by Michael Cuesta. The pilot impressed Showtime executives, leading them to order a full season of 12 episodes. The pilot established the tone and style for the entire series. Although Raff only contributed to the pilot, he continued to be credited as one of the creators. Later, Gordon, Gansa, and Raff won the 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for their work on the pilot.
When production officially began on the first season of *Homeland*, Gordon and Gansa brought in Chip Johannessen, Alexander Cary, Meredith Stiehm, and novelist Henry Bromell to join the writing team. Their close collaboration over the first two seasons helped establish *Homeland* as a television classic. Thanks to the strong synergy among the writers, the show went on to win major awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 64th Emmy Awards. Additionally, Henry Bromell's exceptional talent earned him the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series the following year.
Although the writing team experienced some turbulence starting in season three—due to Meredith Stiehm leaving to pursue a new project, Bromell's sudden passing, and the introduction of new members—the team eventually stabilized. As of season seven, core members like Gordon, Gansa, and Johannessen have continued to be listed among the show’s writers.
It’s worth noting that while some have claimed *Homeland* was created by the team behind *24*, this assertion is not entirely incorrect but somewhat imprecise. Among *Homeland*’s writing team, only one of the two main creators, Howard Gordon, served as a producer on *24*. The other creator, Alex Gansa, was only a writer for season seven, and core member Chip Johannessen contributed as a guest writer for just one episode. Aside from them, the rest of the team had no involvement with *24*.
