A Classic Revisited: My Take on “How to Steal a Million”

As part of my weekly movie ritual, I recently watched “How to Steal a Million.”

While the themes of art forgery and heists might seem well-trodden today, it’s important to remember that this film was released in 1966. Back then, the premise likely felt fresh and innovative, especially with Audrey Hepburn in the lead role.

Audrey Hepburn’s Enduring Charm

Hepburn was reportedly 37 years old during filming, yet she radiates elegance, playfulness, and charm. She truly embodies timeless beauty. Even when dressed as a cleaning lady, her inherent grace shines through, a testament to her unique charisma.

A Charming Duo

The male lead is equally captivating, with striking blue eyes, a tall stature, and an undeniable presence. He and Hepburn make a visually stunning pair. His introduction involves stealing a painting from her family, and her reaction is to shoot at him! Yet, she then bandages his wound and offers him a ride home.

A Family Secret

The reason for her unusual behavior lies in the fact that the stolen Van Gogh painting is a fake, created by her father. Despite appearances, her family is a dynasty of art forgers, profiting from their deceptions since her grandfather’s time.

High Stakes

Her father’s latest scheme involves exhibiting her grandfather’s forged Venus statue at a museum to increase its value. However, the museum hires an expert, threatening to expose their family’s fraudulent activities and ruin them financially.

A Daring Plan

In desperation, she enlists the help of the male lead to steal the statue – essentially stealing their own property. Already captivated by Hepburn’s beauty and aware of the truth, he agrees to participate in the daring heist.

Impregnable Security

The Venus statue is valued at over $1 million, so the museum’s security is understandably tight, with numerous guards, regular patrols, and an alarm system that triggers upon any movement of the statue.

A Psychological Heist

Unlike heist movies that rely on technology or action, “How to Steal a Million” takes a different approach, focusing on psychological tactics, misdirection, and exploiting confusion.

Final Thoughts

I won’t reveal any more details. I highly recommend watching this classic film. Despite being from the 1960s, it’s more enjoyable than many modern movies. The visuals are retro yet timeless, the plot is simple but the dialogue is witty, and, of course, it stars Audrey Hepburn.
