First Look: Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway in Psychological Thriller Mothers’ Instinct
A tantalizing glimpse into the upcoming psychological thriller, Mothers’ Instinct, starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, has been released. The still features the two leading ladies in a seemingly serene setting, enjoying afternoon tea. However, beneath the veneer of tranquility, an undercurrent of tension is palpable.
The photograph possesses an almost dreamlike quality, as if veiled in a delicate mist. While the two actresses are physically close, their body language hints at a guardedness and unease. Mothers’ Instinct is a remake of the 2018 Belgian film of the same name. Original director and screenwriter Olivier Masset-Depasse returns to helm this project, which delves into the lives of 1960s housewives, Alice and Celine, who are not only best friends but also neighbors. They lead idyllic, traditional lives, complete with manicured lawns, successful husbands, and sons of the same age.
When Perfection Crumbles
However, their picture-perfect existence is shattered by a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia begin to unravel their sisterly bond. As the darker aspects of maternal instinct are exposed, a psychological battle of wills ensues. The original film, based on Barbara Abel’s novel Derrière La Haine, garnered a record-breaking nine Magritte Awards (the Belgian equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Film and Best Director.
Hathaway’s Toughest Role Yet
In a previous interview, Anne Hathaway described this role as “the most difficult character I’ve ever played,” explaining that “it touched on my most feared fears. I almost quit the film because I didn’t know if I could go there as an actor.” Mothers’ Instinct, a classic two-lead female film, promises to be a compelling watch. The film is currently slated for release on March 27.
