Review of the animated film "That Christmas": an adaptation of Richard Curtis's book trilogy

Tue Jul 01 2025

Christmas in the quaint English town of Wellington-on-Sea is under threat as a snowstorm disrupts the festive plans of its residents. Young Danny faces the prospect of spending the holiday alone. Sam worries that her twin sister might not receive any presents due to her misbehavior. Meanwhile, teenage Bernadette is tasked with looking after a group of children while their parents are stranded due to the heavy snowfall.

Netflix continues its tradition of providing holiday content with the animated film “That Christmas.” Directed by Simon Otto, the film is based on the book trilogy by Richard Curtis, a well-known enthusiast of Christmas themes. Curtis, the writer behind “Love Actually,” also co-wrote the screenplay for the animated feature. His literary works, “That Christmas,” “Snow Day,” and “Empty Stocking,” are individual children’s stories set in a coastal town. “That Christmas” seamlessly merges these three narratives into one cohesive tale.

A Kaleidoscope of Christmas Stories

Similar to “Love Actually,” “That Christmas” presents a kaleidoscope of interconnected stories. The animated film even makes a subtle nod to the Christmas classic starring Keira Knightley, with the younger generation expressing their reluctance to watch the “old-school, cute movie” every year. In many ways, “That Christmas” can be seen as a “Love Actually” for a younger audience. The schoolchildren, much like the adults, experience love, loneliness, make mistakes, and grapple with the meaning of being a good person. Importantly, each chapter flows seamlessly into the next, with every storyline converging as the residents of Wellington-on-Sea unite to help their neighbors and save Christmas.

Star-Studded Voices and Heartwarming Moments

The film features Santa Claus, voiced by Brian Cox, adding to its charm. Alongside the “Succession” star, the cast includes other British talents such as Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Bill Nighy. The story begins with Santa’s efforts to deliver presents, and his narration accompanies the audience throughout the film. However, Santa and his banter with his reindeer remain in the background, as the focus shifts to ordinary people striving to spend the holiday with their loved ones. “That Christmas” is filled with heartwarming moments: a son surprises his single mother, sisters with contrasting personalities stand up for each other, and a strict teacher is ready to help anyone in need, providing ample reasons to believe in the power of human kindness.

A Cozy Holiday Treat

Not a Classic, But Still Delightful

While “That Christmas” may not become a holiday classic due to its lack of conflict and unpretentious nature, it’s also difficult to find fault with it. The filmmakers have created a cozy film that warms the heart. It’s a comforting remedy for the occasional sadness that many experience during the hectic month of December.
