Storm Riders review: When the dragon roars to the heavens, the wind and cloud meet in shallow waters.

In the realm of Chinese martial arts comics, “The Storm Riders” has long been hailed as a pinnacle of the genre. Today, I’m excited to delve into “The Storm Riders,” a film adaptation of this iconic comic. The story revolves around Lord Conqueror, the formidable leader of the World Society, the most powerful martial arts clan. His quest begins with a prophecy about his destiny.

The Prophecy and the Hunt

Driven by the first half of a cryptic prophecy, Lord Conqueror embarks on a relentless search for children whose names bear the essence of “Wind” and “Cloud.” Simultaneously, he sets his sights on acquiring the four legendary weapons of the martial world, challenging their masters one by one. Among them is Northern Blade, master of the Snow Drinking Blade, whose wife, the renowned beauty Yan Ying, is seized by Lord Conqueror to force his hand.

Tragedy at the Great Buddha

Northern Blade, accompanied by his young son Wind, confronts Lord Conqueror at the Leshan Giant Buddha. Amidst a rare flood that engulfs the Buddha’s knees, a ferocious beast emerges from the Lingyun Grotto, carrying Northern Blade into the depths. Young Wind is taken back to World Society by Lord Conqueror.

The Fall of the Bu Clan

Meanwhile, World Society’s ruthless pursuit of the Peerless Sword leads to the massacre of the Bu Clan. The clan leader’s son, Cloud, witnesses the carnage without shedding a tear. He is brought to World Society and, alongside Wind and Frost, becomes an apprentice to Lord Conqueror, mastering the Cloud Dispelling Palm, Wind God Kick, and Frosty Palm techniques, respectively.

A Decade of Expansion

With Wind and Cloud at his side, World Society’s power grows exponentially. Ten years later, as Wind and Cloud reach adulthood, Lord Conqueror seeks to uncover the remaining secrets of his destiny. He sends Wind and Frost to find Mud Buddha, while Cloud is tasked with assassinating Lone Sword in Unparalleled City.

The Mud Buddha and the Massacre

Wind and Frost locate Mud Buddha, only to find him afflicted with sores due to revealing too much of the future. He requires the healing touch of the Fire Monkey, a treasure stolen by Lone Sword’s son. As Lone Sword’s son returns to Unparalleled City, he discovers that Cloud has slaughtered everyone

The Sword Saint’s Challenge

Driven by grief, Lone Sword’s son seeks the aid of his uncle, Sword Saint. A decade prior, Sword Saint and Lord Conqueror had arranged a duel. With the time now ripe, Lord Conqueror receives the second half of his prophecy from Mud Buddha: “Nine dragons roar, the world transforms; Wind and Cloud swim in shallow waters.”

Love, Betrayal, and Sacrifice

Determined to defy fate, Lord Conqueror marries his daughter Charity to Wind, igniting conflict between Wind and Cloud. On the wedding day, Cloud disrupts the ceremony, leading to a fierce battle between him and Wind. As Lord Conqueror attempts to assassinate them, Charity sacrifices herself, intercepting his deadly Three-Part Divinity Palm.

Cloud’s Quest for Eternal Rest

After Charity’s death, Cloud leaves World Society with her body. Seeking to preserve her beauty, he steals the Millennium Ice Soul from the Righteous Prince’s Manor. Cloud then brings Charity’s body to the nearly completed imperial tomb, ensuring her a perfect resting place.

The Loss of an Arm

Lord Conqueror confronts Cloud, who, despite his talent, is no match for his master, especially since Lord Conqueror held back during Cloud’s training. Cloud sacrifices an arm to escape.

Rebirth with the Kirin Arm

The gravely wounded Cloud is rescued by Dr. Witness, whose Kirin Arm resonates with Cloud. Dr. Witness bestows the Kirin Arm upon Cloud, granting him a new lease on life. Encouraged by Dr. Witness’s daughter, Cloud recovers and surpasses his former strength.

Wind’s Descent into the Cave

Meanwhile, Wind is consumed by grief over Charity’s death. Lord Conqueror sends him to Lingyun Grotto to find Blood Bodhi. There, Wind discovers his father’s remains and the Snow Drinking Blade. This awakens his potential, and after consuming Blood Bodhi, he uses his father’s Ice Heart Spell to freeze the Fire Kirin, avenging his father.

The Sword Saint’s Demise

The duel between Lord Conqueror and Sword Saint commences. Sword Saint, after years of seclusion, has mastered the Sword Twenty-Three technique, allowing his spirit to leave his body and unleash unparalleled sword energy. As Sword Saint is about to strike down Lord Conqueror, Dr. Witness’s daughter accidentally touches Sword Saint’s physical form, causing his spirit to dissipate. Now, only Wind and Cloud can defeat Lord Conqueror.

Destiny Fulfilled

Wind and Cloud set aside their differences and fight side by side. However, Lord Conqueror’s Three-Part Divinity Palm has reached its peak, proving too powerful even for their combined might. In a crucial moment, Cloud’s blood unseals the Peerless Sword, hidden in the Sword Tomb. Together, Wind and Cloud combine their powers, finally defeating Lord Conqueror.

The Weight of Fate

Martial arts stories often grapple with the concept of destiny, and “The Storm Riders” is no exception. Lord Conqueror’s fate, seemingly predetermined by Mud Buddha’s prophecy, is ultimately a product of his own actions. His ruthless ambition to dominate the world led him to Wind and Cloud, who became both the cause of his initial success and the agents of his ultimate downfall.
