A Tribute to Masters: Remembering Legends
IN MEMORY OF: 3 Women (4K) - A Robert Altman Masterpiece
3 WOMEN 4K (1977)
Director: Robert Altman
Highlights: Born from a dream, it crowned an actress.
“3 Women” emerged from a dream Robert Altman experienced during his wife’s hospitalization. Haunted by the fear of her passing, he envisioned directing a film starring Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek, centered around a theme of identity swapping. Upon waking, he meticulously jotted down further details in his notebook.
Altman himself acknowledged the significant influence of Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” on this film. Indeed, “3 Women” deviates from Altman’s typical style, leaning towards a David Lynch-esque atmosphere. Shelley Duvall’s captivating performance earned her the Best Actress award at the 30th Cannes Film Festival. Shortly thereafter, she reached another artistic pinnacle with her role in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic “The Shining.”
With Shelley Duvall’s passing on July 11th of last year, and coinciding with the centennial of Robert Altman’s birth, the Shanghai International Film Festival pays special homage to these two remarkable talents with this screening.
