In the scorching jungles of Southeast Asia, the sounds of war echo through the dense foliage. The year is 1969, and the Vietnam War is at its peak. It is in this treacherous environment that Captain Benjamin Willard, a seasoned and seasoned riverboat commander, is dispatched on a perilous mission. Officially, the operation does not exist, nor will it ever exist, in the records of the U.S. military. Willard's objective is clear-cut: eliminate the rogue Green Beret Colonel Walter Kurtz, a man who has transcended the boundaries of conventional military conduct. Absolutely mind-blowing! The film is a spectacle of pyrotechnics, napalm, and exploding ordnance, a hallucinatory journey through carnage and chaos. It's a lesson learned from the French, a lament sung by the Americans. This descent up the Mekong River is a harrowing look at the perversion of humanity and the lunacy of war. Civilization and morality find no sanctuary here, not even with a soundtrack of surf rock. The three and a half hours flew by without a hint of boredom (though the final segment with its extensive shadows was a tad heavy). It's a rare cinematic feat. Kudos to the Shanghai Film Square's Hall One and its massive screen; the picture's brightness put the China Film Archive to shame.

I wholeheartedly agree with Roger Ebert's perspective on this film: modern civilization is merely a precarious structure perched precariously above the ravenous jaws of nature, ready to be swallowed whole without a second thought. A happy life, in the face of such fragility, is merely a day-to-day reprieve. More than portraying war, it reveals the truths we'd rather remain blissfully ignorant of. | Revisiting this on the big screen was a truly seismic experience, pinning me to my seat.
