In the South Korean drama, Beasts Clawing at Straws, director Kim Hyun-seok masterfully weaves together the intertwining lives of a struggling restaurant owner, Do Jae-ho, and a customs officer, Lee Young-ok. Both characters are forced to navigate the complexities of their lives, each with their unique set of problems, amidst their own personal struggles. The film opens with Jae-ho, who runs a small restaurant, Doenjang Town, in a seedy part of Seoul. Struggling to keep the family business afloat, Jae-ho is also caring for his ailing mother, who suffers from dementia. Despite the heavy burden, he works tirelessly to provide for her needs and ensure the survival of the restaurant. However, the economic struggles are taking a toll on Jae-ho, and he is often at odds with his mother about their dire financial situation. On the other hand, we are introduced to Lee Young-ok, a customs officer who seems to lead a comfortable life. However, beneath the surface, he is dealing with his own set of problems. In a moment of desperation, he borrowed money from a loan shark to help out his girlfriend, Yoon-ji, who had gotten into debt. However, when he asks her to return the loan, she reveals that she has left him for another man, taking the money he had borrowed with her. This act of betrayal not only leaves Young-ok financially crippled but also emotionally drained. The fates of Jae-ho and Young-ok intersect when Jae-ho finds a large sum of cash in a sauna locker while using the facilities. This unexpected windfall gives Jae-ho a glimmer of hope, as it might just be the solution to their financial woes. However, the money's origin is a mystery, and Jae-ho soon finds himself entangled in a web of deceit and corruption. As Jae-ho tries to unravel the mystery behind the cash, he inadvertently draws the attention of the loan shark's henchmen, who are determined to recover the money from him. Meanwhile, Young-ok, still reeling from his girlfriend's betrayal, is tasked with tracking down Jae-ho, who has gone into hiding after finding the cash. Little does Young-ok know that the very same amount of money has landed in Jae-ho's hands, setting off a chain of events that would eventually link their two stories. While navigating the complex landscape of loan sharks, corrupt officials, and hidden agendas, Jae-ho and Young-ok are forced to confront their own personal demons. Jae-ho's struggle to keep the family restaurant afloat takes center stage, as he grapples with the consequences of his newfound windfall. Will he find a way to use the money to save the restaurant and care for his mother, or will the lure of easy money ultimately consume him? Young-ok, on the other hand, finds himself caught in a downward spiral, struggling to come to terms with his girlfriend's infidelity and his own vulnerability. As he delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Jae-ho, he is forced to confront his own emotions and the harsh realities of his situation.
