Handlung

The movie "How to Steal a Million" is a 1966 American romantic comedy directed by William Wyler. It stars Audrey Hepburn, Peter O'Toole, and Hugh Griffith in key roles. The film's plot revolves around the character of Nicole Bonaparte, a beautiful and sophisticated woman who finds herself entangled in a web of deceit as she tries to protect her father's reputation. Nicole's father, a wealthy and renowned art collector, Edgar Bonaparte, has been secretly forging priceless art pieces and selling them to unsuspecting collectors. His masterpieces are so convincing that even the art world is fooled. However, the forged artworks are not the only problem; Edgar has inadvertently created a priceless statue, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it will reveal his scheme, and thus ruin his and Nicole's reputation. To counter this situation, Nicole comes up with an ingenious plan. She sets out to steal the statue, which is valued at $250,000, from a Paris museum. Her plan involves hiring a charming and resourceful cat burglar, Simon Dexter, played by Peter O'Toole. Simon is known for his exceptional skills, and Nicole believes he is the only person capable of pulling off this daring heist. Simon initially agrees to steal the statue for $100,000 but decides to up his price to $200,000 when he discovers the statue's true worth. Nicole eventually accepts his demand, and they devise a plan to break into the museum during the middle of a charity gala. The gala is being attended by some of Paris's high society, and Nicole's father's reputation will be at stake if they are caught. As the night of the heist approaches, Nicole and Simon grow closer, their mutual attraction becoming apparent despite their initial animosity towards each other. Nicole, however, is torn between her love for Simon and the fact that his services are only meant to temporarily help her family. Meanwhile, a charming museum guard, David, played by Freddie Insler, becomes suspicious of Nicole's interest in the gala. On the night of the heist, Nicole and Simon navigate the gala with ease, dodging the security guards and partygoers while making their way to the exhibit hall where the statue is kept. The museum's alarm system poses a significant challenge, but Simon's expertise allows him to disable it in no time. As they make their way out of the museum, they are met with more unexpected obstacles, including a drunken partygoer and the suspicious museum guard, David. As Nicole and Simon successfully escape with the statue, they realize that the experience has brought them closer together. However, their relationship remains complicated, and they struggle to reconcile their feelings with the practical realities of their plan. In the climactic final scene, Nicole and Simon confront the consequences of their actions as they prepare to take the statue back to Edgar. The movie culminates in a satisfying conclusion, where Edgar's reputation is saved, and Nicole and Simon's love becomes apparent to all. "How to Steal a Million" is a light-hearted and charming rom-com that has aged remarkably well, thanks to its witty dialogue, stunning Parisian settings, and memorable performances from the lead cast.
