The Five Venoms

Handlung

The Five Venoms is a 1978 Shaw Bros. martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh, starring Wei Pai, Sun Chien, Lo Meng, Chang Ping, and Chen Kuan-tai. The film's narrative revolves around the mysterious and perilous world of five former pupils of a dying master, each possessing a unique style of kung-fu. The story begins with a dying master, who, aware of his impending demise, decides to pass on his knowledge and last wishes to his only remaining student, Kuo Ching (played by Wei Pai). The master sends Kuo Ching on a perilous journey to seek out five former pupils, each having mastered a distinct form of kung-fu. These five pupils are known as the "Five Venoms" due to their deadly skills and deadly intentions. Kuo Ching's journey takes him to the remote and secluded regions of the mountains, where the first of the Five Venoms resides. This initial encounter is with the Venom of the Centipede (played by Sun Chien), a cunning and agile martial artist with the ability to utilize a style that allows him to traverse a series of wires to traverse vast distances. The Venom of the Centipede becomes the first adversary that Kuo Ching must face, with the two engaging in an impressive display of martial skills. As the battle unfolds, Kuo Ching witnesses the Venom's impressive capabilities and learns that he has been secretly training for a life of crime, preying upon unsuspecting villagers. Undeterred, Kuo Ching continues his quest to find the remaining members of the Five Venoms. His next destination is the remote region of the swamp, where he encounters the Poison Dart (played by Lo Meng), a lethal and merciless martial artist with the ability to generate an unrelenting stream of poisonous darts from his fingertips. Like the Venom of the Centipede, the Poison Dart has abandoned his former noble pursuits and instead turned to a life of pillage and destruction. Kuo Ching, driven by both duty and necessity, presses on, braving further challenges and confronting additional members of the Five Venoms. His path leads him to the Poisonous Toad, a master of stealth and misdirection with the ability to alter his body's color and texture to blend seamlessly into the shadows (played by Chang Ping). With each adversary defeated, Kuo Ching deepens his understanding of the distinct styles of the Five Venoms and, more critically, the nature of their motivations and the true reason behind their descent into villainy. Through his encounters with each new member of the Five Venoms, Kuo Ching discovers that they had all been once-noble warriors who had been misled and corrupted by the teachings of a devious and manipulative instructor. As the narrative unfolds and Kuo Ching draws nearer to confronting his remaining adversaries, he is confronted by the Venom of the Snake (played by Chen Kuan-tai) – a master of manipulation with the ability to assume the appearance and guile of the most cunning of serpents. The Venom of the Snake proves to be one of the most cunning of adversaries and requires Kuo Ching to utilize all of his skills and cunning to outwit and overpower him. Through this final confrontation, Kuo Ching comes to appreciate the true extent of the Five Venoms' skills, their corrupt nature, and the motivations behind their destructive ways. His encounter with these former pupils ultimately brings him a measure of closure and the understanding of the gravity of their mistakes, and, in a sense, redemption. The film concludes with a climactic showdown between Kuo Ching and the Venom of the Toad, a battle-frenzied and action-packed conclusion that showcases the martial prowess of each combatant. Through this battle, the true character of Kuo Ching – as a noble warrior determined to bring justice and redemption to the Five Venoms – is revealed. Ultimately, Kuo Ching emerges victorious, having defeated the last of the Five Venoms and fulfilled his master's last wish. In "The Five Venoms," Chang Cheh masterfully weaves together a compelling narrative that highlights the complexities of the martial arts world. Through the film's intricate web of characters and the diverse styles they represent, the viewer gains a deeper appreciation of the philosophical nature of kung-fu and the true nature of the characters, both the protagonists and antagonists alike. The film's enduring popularity stems, in part, from its memorable characters and intense martial arts sequences, as well as its thought-provoking themes and the manner in which the narrative delves into the complex emotional landscape of each of its characters. As an exemplary example of martial arts cinema, "The Five Venoms" has secured its place within the pantheon of classic martial arts films, captivating audiences with its gripping narrative, captivating characters, and, most of all, its awe-inspiring martial arts sequences.
