Knock Off

Knock Off, a 1998 action-thriller film directed by Tsui Hark, follows the story of Jason Statham's predecessor, Jean-Claude Van Damme, as he plays the role of Marcus Ray, a fashion designer who runs a successful business in Hong Kong. Ray's career is on the brink of disaster after he steals a valuable design from his former business partner and rival, Victor Drazen, played by Lela Rochon. However, their success attracts the unwanted attention of a group of terrorists, played by a diverse international cast, including Masaaki Daimon, Dennis Chan, and Peter Bong. The group, known for their cunning and ruthless methods, infiltrate the CIA's operations in Hong Kong, using the cover of a seemingly insignificant handover ceremony as a cover for a more sinister plot. They begin to smuggle explosives in counterfeit jeans into the city. Their plot unfolds during the transfer of Hong Kong's sovereignty from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China, in 1997. Using the massive influx of visitors to the city for the handover as a smokescreen, the group plans to detonate the explosives within the highly populated areas of Hong Kong. Their goal, seemingly simple and straightforward, but incredibly devastating in the end. As the story unfolds, Marcus and Caitlin begin to uncover the plot, with their unique partnership and set of skills allowing them to navigate through the complex web of international espionage and fashion that Hong Kong's high society is shrouded in. With their CIA connections and the ever-changing atmosphere of a city undergoing a drastic change in its politics, they set out to stop the terrorists and save the city from impending doom. Throughout the movie, the tension between Marcus and Caitlin builds as their partnership, initially a working relationship, begins to develop into a romantic connection.
