Trama
Cuando Sophie baja del avión en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Taiwán Taoyuan, el húmedo aire de verano la envuelve como un cálido abrazo. Ah, so Taipei culture boils down to taro balls, stinky tofu, and a touch of artsy-fartsy hipsterism. Got it. And Shawn Dou's cameo is clearly just a favor. Director Arvin Chen, who came back from the States and worked with Edward Yang on "Yi Yi," spent so many years struggling to be all indie and artsy. Now he's finally made a purely mindless, fluffy rom-com for the streaming era. Congrats, I guess.

As with "Drive," it struggles with bringing something fresh to the screen while comfortably relying on clichés. Of course, it's YA, so maybe it doesn't need to be so meticulously examined. But it's still a bit disheartening that Ross, at 33, is limited to these kinds of roles (: even though he's still handsome). Seeing Wei-man Jiang pop up induces a "never thought I'd see the day..." feeling. Janet and Bai Bai's cameos are pleasant surprises. And the OST featuring Amber An's "Come Chase My Boyfriend Away" is wild and chaotic.

With a rating of 5.7, the "Taipei-ness" of *Love in Taipei* is practically non-existent. This story could easily be set in Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, or anywhere else. Only the background music makes a feeble attempt to create the atmosphere of "this was filmed in Taipei." The only thing that makes it slightly better than other ABC (American-Born Chinese) films is that the lead actors are relatively pleasing to the eye. However, like many ABC movies, it mirrors the dilemma of ABCs themselves. While they may sincerely want to showcase Eastern culture and Eastern issues to the white society, they are completely unaware that they have already become exactly the kind of stereotypical symbols of the East that exist within that white society.
