The Mystery Plane is a 1944 American thriller film directed by Howard Bretherton and starring Kane Richmond, Jean Parker, and Kane Richmond as dual protagonists, one being a fictional twin. In this film, Kane Richmond plays dual roles of American inventor-turned-pilot and his double, while Jean Parker is portrayed as a damsel in distress. The mystery plane in question refers to a top-secret airplane invented by James 'Jim' Davis (Kane Richmond), a genius inventor, which has an incredibly advanced autopilot system. The story begins with a dramatic sequence where James is on a night mission with his plane when suddenly, it is hijacked by a foreign agent led by Mr. Zor, who is determined to obtain the advanced autopilot system, which is believed by many to be the future of air travel. The film showcases the kidnapping of James Davis by the foreign agents and an identical double, also called James Davis, takes his place. As it turns out, this other James had been missing since the start of the film's events, and his appearance creates a perfect situation for the twin brothers to be mistaken as identical. Meanwhile, James's girlfriend, Jean 'Jeanie' Anderson, played by Jean Parker, is trying to unravel the mystery behind James's disappearance and his top-secret invention's disappearance. The plot becomes thicker with many twists as a series of unexpected situations occur during the investigation. As time passes, both James and his double navigate their respective situations while avoiding Mr. Zor's men. James discovers that his double's past may hold the key to the identity of the imposter. The investigation leads James to the imposter's location, and with the help of a trusted friend and co-pilot, James ultimately uncovers the truth behind the fake James's disappearance. Ultimately, James must use his top-secret invention to his advantage. With all the information he's gathered during the investigation, he devises a plan that puts him and his co-pilot in harm's way while they attempt to rescue the actual James from the clutches of the foreign agents. With his autopilot invention, he successfully manages to escape the plane, which is hijacked by the foreign agents. The actual twist at the end is a classic 'double-cross' situation where Mr. Zor's men turn against Mr. Zor, and Mr. Zor gets taken away. James returns home to reunite with Jeanie, putting the Mystery Plane mystery to rest.
