Woke is a 2020 American slasher film directed by Mark Young. The movie tells the story of Mia Holloway, a young woman who meets her boyfriend's family for the first time at their remote cabin in Cleveland. Unbeknownst to Mia, or perhaps intentionally kept a secret by her boyfriend, she is entering a household with a dark and sinister history. As Mia arrives at the cabin, she meets her boyfriend's parents, John and Ellen. On the surface, they appear to be friendly and welcoming, but beneath this facade lies a more sinister intent. Mia soon discovers that she has been brought to the cabin for a gruesome purpose: to take her place. The twist is revealed when Mia discovers that the family has a habit of killing their significant others and replacing them with new victims. The previous girlfriends had met with a grim fate, and Mia is next on the list. Her boyfriend, it turns out, is not what he seems, and his loyalty lies with his family's twisted traditions. As Mia struggles to come to terms with this revelation, she tries to escape the cabin and make her way back home. However, her attempts are met with resistance from John and Ellen, who will stop at nothing to complete their twisted ritual. The cabin, once a secluded retreat, becomes a prison for Mia, with no clear escape route. Despite being outnumbered and outsmarted, Mia refuses to give up. She uses her wits and resourcefulness to try and outmaneuver John and Ellen. However, their tactics are relentless and calculated, leaving Mia with few options. The film takes a dark turn as Mia's desperation grows. With the cabin's layout working against her, and the family's sinister plans closing in, Mia is forced to confront the reality of her situation. The tension builds as she searches for a way out, all while being stalked by her boyfriend's depraved family members. In a tense showdown, Mia finds herself trapped in a room with a seemingly harmless antique. However, this ordinary-looking item becomes the key to her salvation, and with its help, Mia is finally able to turn the tables on her captors. Woke is a chilling take on the slasher genre, with a narrative that skillfully subverts expectations. By presenting a seemingly ordinary family and a familiar setting, the film lulls the audience into a false sense of security, only to deliver a jarring and intense climax. The movie's twist is delivered with a slow-burning sense of dread, making it all the more unsettling. As the credits roll, it becomes clear that Woke is a masterclass in suspense and tension. By crafting a narrative that's both plausible and terrifying, the film delivers a deeply unsettling viewing experience. Mia's struggle to survive is both compelling and empathetic, making it difficult not to root for her as she tries to outsmart her captors. With its dark and twisted plot, coupled with a sense of foreboding that permeates every scene, Woke is a must-watch for fans of the slasher genre. It's a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat, guessing until the very end, and leaving you with a lasting impression long after the credits roll.
