Dans un futur dystopique où les États-Unis se sont transformés en un État policier brutal, les chaînes de télévision ont remplacé le divertissement traditionnel par des jeux mortels qui opposent des prisonniers dans un combat à mort. L'attraction principale est "Le Prix du Danger", une émission populaire mettant en scène des condamnés à mort forcés de courir pour sauver leur vie tout en étant poursuivis par des tueurs professionnels. Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), un homme accusé à tort, voit une opportunité de blanchir son nom et d'échapper aux griffes du gouvernement totalitaire lorsqu'il est condamné à participer à "Le Prix du Danger". Avec l'aide de son vieil ami, Damon Knight (Marvin Chomsky), Ben entreprend de survivre au jeu mortel et de dénoncer la vérité sur le gouvernement corrompu. Tandis que Ben navigue sur un terrain traître, évitant les regards mortels des tueurs professionnels et les caméras de surveillance qui surveillent chacun de ses mouvements, il commence à démêler un complot sinistre visant à contrôler la population par le divertissement.
