Plot

Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger is a 1973 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh. The film centers around the tumultuous life of Luk Ching-Yang, a notorious horse thief, and his wife Liu Lu-Yian. The story begins two decades prior, when Luk and Lu-Yian were a devoted couple, roaming the country and evading capture. Luk's brother, Kiu Hung, had initially been a trusted ally, sharing the spoils of their horse thieving exploits. However, over time, Kiu Hung's treachery towards Luk began to emerge, and the brotherly bond between them was irreparably damaged. Tragedy struck when Kiu Hung double-crossed Luk, leaving his wife Lu-Yian heartbroken and vengeful. The couple's relationship was put to the test as Lu-Yian chose to leave Luk, abandoning their nomadic lifestyle to start anew. Luk, consumed by his anger and desire for revenge, spent the next 20 years in prison, where he honed his martial arts skills, transforming them into a finely-tuned instrument for vengeance. Upon his release, Luk reunites with his wife Lu-Yian, who has built a new life for herself. She now lives with her adopted daughter, Liu Wan-Long, a bright and resourceful young woman. Unbeknownst to Lu-Yian, Liu Wan-Long has her own aspirations and motivations, which will eventually become intertwined with Luk's quest for revenge. Luk soon discovers that Kiu Hung has been leading a life of luxury, having married a wealthy heiress and amassed a considerable fortune. The once-treacherous brother has abandoned their past life, now a changed man who claims to have long outgrown his thieving ways. However, Luk sees through Kiu Hung's facade and recognizes the deceit that still lingers within him. Kiu Hung's past comes back to haunt him when Luk's loyal friend, Pak Suk-Fu, a young warrior, arrives in town seeking to join Luk. Pak Suk-Fu's unwavering loyalty to Luk sets off a wave of violence, as Kiu Hung's men attempt to eliminate the new arrivals. In the midst of this turmoil, Pak Suk-Fu finds himself increasingly enthralled by Liu Wan-Long, who shares his enthusiasm for martial arts and sense of justice. As the battle between Luk and Kiu Hung escalates, Lu-Yian is forced to confront her turbulent past and rekindle her relationship with Luk. The couple's bond begins to mend, forged by the unrelenting pursuit of revenge against their common foe. Meanwhile, Pak Suk-Fu becomes an integral component of Luk's quest, as they converge on Kiu Hung's estate with the intention of exacting justice. Upon their arrival, the trio uncovers a web of deceit, corruption, and treachery that threatens to engulf them all. Kiu Hung has become embroiled in a dark underworld, where ruthless individuals will stop at nothing to achieve their twisted goals. As tensions rise, Luk and his newfound allies find themselves entangled in a perilous world where honor, loyalty, and mortality are constantly at risk. Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger is an action-packed tale of friendship, family, and betrayal.
