In the late 19th century, London is gripped by fear as a string of brutal murders rocks the city's streets. An unknown assailant, known only by his pseudonym Jack the Ripper, has been targeting prostitutes, leaving a trail of blood and terror in his wake. The authorities are baffled, and the public is on edge. Enter Inspector Frederick Abberline, a seasoned detective from Scotland Yard. Abberline is a complex and troubled individual, haunted by his own demons and struggling with addiction to opium. Despite his personal struggles, he is determined to catch the killer and bring him to justice. As Abberline delves deeper into the case, he becomes increasingly obsessed with catching the Ripper. He is driven by a desire to prove himself and to redeem himself in the eyes of his colleagues, who see him as a washed-up and unreliable detective. Abberline's investigation takes him down a dark and twisted path, as he encounters a cast of characters who are all linked to the murders in some way. One of the key characters Abberline encounters is a young woman named Florence Kelly, a former prostitute who is now working as a medium and a spiritualist. Florence is beautiful and intelligent, but also troubled and damaged by her past experiences. As Abberline gets to know her, he finds himself falling for her, despite the danger and uncertainty that surrounds her. Meanwhile, Abberline becomes convinced that the Ripper is not just a random killer, but a member of a secret society that is working to cover up the truth behind the murders. The society, known as the Order of the Skull, is said to be made up of high-ranking members of society, including politicians, businessmen, and even members of the royal family. As Abberline digs deeper, he uncovers a web of corruption and deceit that goes all the way to the top. He learns that the Ripper is not just a killer, but a pawn in a larger game of power and conspiracy. The true identity of the Ripper is revealed to be one of the members of the Order, a man named William Gull who is a surgeon and a respected member of society. Gull, played by Ian Holm, is a chilling and unhinged figure who sees himself as a mastermind and a visionary. He believes that he is doing the Lord's work, ridding the city of a perceived evil and restoring order to society. But Abberline sees through Gull's twisted logic and knows that he must be stopped. The film builds towards a thrilling and gruesome climax as Abberline and Gull engage in a cat-and-mouse game of wits and cunning. The tension is electric as the two men clash in a battle of wills, with the fate of the city and the lives of the women hanging in the balance. In the end, Abberline emerges victorious, but not without scars. He has seen the darkest depths of human nature and has been forever changed by the experience. Florence, who had become his love interest, is also forever changed, and the two of them part ways, their lives forever linked by the horrors of the Ripper's crimes. The film ends on a haunting note, with Abberline reflecting on the nature of evil and the human condition. He realizes that the true horror is not the Ripper himself, but the society that enabled him to exist and thrive. The film lingers on the image of a London shrouded in darkness and fear, a city that is forever changed by the crimes of the Ripper. In the final shot, Florence is shown, but her face is not shown. Her face and identity are hidden in a shadow, just like the Ripper.
