Trama
In "Un colpo da dilettanti", l'affabile sicario Melvin Smiley (Mark Wahlberg) si ritrova in una situazione precaria. Costantemente sfruttato dai suoi spietati colleghi, Melvin è costretto a destreggiarsi nel pericoloso mondo degli omicidi su commissione. Quando lui e la sua squadra rapiscono la figlia del magnate dell'elettronica Benny Chan (Al Borde), le cose prendono una svolta inaspettata. Mentre Melvin cerca di negoziare il suo rilascio, si ritrova coinvolto in una complessa rete di inganni e tradimenti. I suoi colleghi, tra cui l'astuto e spietato Socrates (André Benjamin) e l'irrequieto Gashadee (Leland Orser), sembrano più interessati a riempirsi le proprie tasche che a portare a termine il lavoro. Con una serie di disavventure ed errori crescenti, Melvin si ritrova in una disperata corsa per sopravvivere e redimersi. Mentre "Un colpo da dilettanti" si avvia verso la sua esplosiva conclusione, Melvin deve affrontare la domanda ultima: può sfuggire alle grinfie dei suoi spietati soci e trovare la redenzione in un mondo dove la lealtà è un lusso che in pochi possono permettersi? Absolutely loved it! What a delightful surprise! The metaphor of Waiting for Godot is obvious, but brilliantly executed. The actors' performances on stage were stunning, embodying a freedom and despair that I hadn't anticipated. There were moments watching these seemingly mad characters on stage that genuinely brought tears to my eyes. However, I wasn't entirely sold on the ending. The escape felt somewhat unresolved, and the director's on-stage monologue didn't quite manage to ground such a dramatic turn of events and weighty subject matter, nor did it adequately address the moral conflicts of the criminals' escape. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed this magnificent story.

Unlike many inspirational films about "starting from scratch and winning competitions," this play is meaningless for the actors from the very beginning. It offers neither reduced sentences nor financial gain. The cheering and fanfare merely obstruct what they've been waiting for in prison - freedom. As for the director, he consistently uses the story to achieve tangible success and fame, leveraging a nihilistic narrative to satisfy his own existentialist needs. The entire ensemble is absurd enough. Therefore, the ending is crucial as it dismantles both nihilism and existentialism.
