Catwoman: A Fairy Tale for Adults?
French director Pitof, known for “Vidocq” (2001), ventured into Hollywood to create a modern-day fairy tale with “Catwoman.” The story unfolds in a kingdom where a Queen, whose beauty outshines all, reigns supreme. Her King is utterly captivated by her allure. However, as fate would have it, the Queen’s radiance begins to fade, and the King’s gaze starts to wander.
The Cosmetic Kingdom
This isn’t just any kingdom; it’s a cosmetic empire, and the Queen is its face, both literally and figuratively. Eventually, the King sets his sights on a new woman, a new face for his cosmetic corporation, leaving the former Queen consumed by bitterness and resentment.
But this is merely the prologue.
From Cinderella to Catwoman
In this same cosmetic kingdom, we find a Cinderella figure (arguably, all African American women are “Cinderellas” in some sense). She’s the subject of constant torment and ridicule. But, with a little help from a “fairy,” she transforms into a stunning… not princess, but a Catwoman, complete with a full array of S&M accessories and feline mannerisms. As expected, this feline Cinderella exacts her revenge on her tormentors and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
More Than Just a Comic Book
In essence, “Catwoman” is a comic book adaptation, and the plot could have taken various forms. What truly matters is the casting of the leading ladies: Halle Berry as Catwoman and Sharon Stone as the villainous Queen. This pairing is the film’s greatest asset. These Hollywood icons could simply walk across the screen, and it would be captivating. Berry’s Catwoman leaps and dances across rooftops (with some CGI assistance), while Stone delivers a memorable performance in the final showdown between good and evil.
The Men Fade into the Background
Compared to these powerful women, the male characters – Benjamin Bratt as the Prince and Lambert Wilson as the King – fade into the background. After watching the film, one can’t help but wish for a Catwoman suit, Sharon Stone’s hairstyle, and the figures of both actresses.
But alas, the life of a film critic, involving movie screenings and snacking on chips with cola, doesn’t exactly lend itself to achieving such a physique!
