あらすじ

Watching a movie like this feels like a magical experience. I kept internally reminding myself not to be overly rational, not to analyze or evaluate it, but simply to listen. It felt like I wasn't watching a movie but participating in a piece of performance art, observing the lives of the elderly and feeling an instinctive sense of sorrow and emotion. As the credits rolled, displaying the names of 32,099 people who crowdsourced the project, any judgment of the film itself became irrelevant. The meaning it carries is far greater than just a movie.

The term "rescue recording" is fitting. The initial intention is commendable, but for this kind of subject matter, simply moving people emotionally is far from enough. It is often interspersed with beautiful (but contrived) empty shots. At the beginning, one is moved to tears, but from the middle onward, it's mostly yawns. "Removing the suffering" is counterproductive. The content is thin and superficial, the assembly of footage is weak, and without the pretty shots, it becomes a short interview compilation. The "aesthetically pleasing" production approach is closer to a drama, but the end result is more like a photography exhibition on the theme of comfort women. If you're going to film interviews, you need to learn where Wang Bing's power comes from.

The subject matter is compelling, but this documentary barely coalesces into a coherent story. It relies heavily on empty shots to convey emotion and presents the content in a fragmented, superficial manner, lacking depth. The intention behind the camera work is too conspicuous. While acknowledging the difficulty of filming, a documentary isn't merely an investigative report; it must be presented to the audience as a mature, cinematic work.

This might be the last visual record of these veterans. Regardless of the technical aspects, the documentary's intrinsic value warrants a five-star rating.
