If it weren't for that final montage, I probably would've given it a solid four stars. I was enjoying the majority of the film, but that ending was just... underwhelming. I get what they were trying to do, but that forceful retrospective tribute clashes so heavily with the tone of the previous three hours. There are just too many "love letters to cinema" this year. The industry needs saving through new and good films, not by telling the audience a hundred times how hard our journey has been.

Speechless. A true epic. One of the best movies about Hollywood, a real Hollywood story. Like that conversation between the critic and the star, no one cares about this big house. We're just wave after wave. The brightest ones fade away in an instant. But those movies, those faces, they stay. A hundred years from now, a thousand years from now, a young person will pass by and see this image, and they'll feel a sense of familiarity. Highly recommend this film be shown in film history classes. It's too much of a cinephile's dream, and the movie deserves to be obsessed over. The best Hollywood movie of the year. The final montage sent shivers down my spine.

When the montage that breaks the fourth wall cuts back to the male lead sitting in the cinema, I had the exact same tearful smile as him. Thank you to the film and the people who make films.

LaRoy brings all the dudes to watch her dad's snake-wrangling spectacle. Lady Fay Zhu, on the other hand, exudes the energy of a hardened butch ready to hit up the gay bar across the street and ask Mama Zhao if she needs help putting out any fires.

Perhaps you understand the beauty of ending one's life after the dreamlike embrace of fleeting pleasures has faded, after a brief and civil exchange with an old friend in the banquet hall, after tipping the attendant generously, as you waltz back to your room upstairs, accompanied by music. Or maybe you grasp the beauty of disappearing into the night with the music, without a word, after running into a dance hall while being chased, after embracing the man who loves you deeply on the dance floor, pledging your lives to each other, yet feeling unable to leave this dream factory of cinema. Perhaps it's when all the absurd, frenzied, dazzling, and decadent parties are over, when all the fear, loneliness, and painful memories have subsided into tranquility...
