あらすじ

Laughing through tears is a common thread in these British working-class films. The title and the film itself have a bittersweet quality because the more humor and "inspiration" it offers, the more suffering the unemployed workers endure. Danny's final speech is the key: music doesn't bring supposed hope, expressing anger ("Why is Lennon dead and Thatcher still alive?!") and standing together will. And young Ewan is just so handsome...

The latter half was a silent tearjerker, with the rendition of "Danny Boy" outside the hospital being the most heart-wrenching moment. The warmth, the ensemble cast, and the social backdrop of a pivotal era reminded me of "The Piano in a Factory." This kind of melodrama feels like a unique product of the '90s; no matter how well-made, anything created later struggles to feel as authentic. The ending, with the bus slowly passing over the Thames in the deep night while a miners' lament gently plays, left me unable to find any joy.
