Dark Command

あらすじ

In the midst of a contentious time in Kansas Territory, 1856, a young Texan by the name of Bob Seton rides into the vibrant city of Lawrence, seeking a fresh start. As he makes himself at home and takes in the sights and sounds of his new surroundings, he finds himself immediately drawn to Mary McCloud, the intelligent and beautiful daughter of the local banker, McCloud. The air is thick with tension, however, as the debate over slavery continues to simmer and the country hurtles towards the impending conflict that will become the American Civil War. The politics of the time period are complex, with opposing factions vying for control and influence. While some citizens of Lawrence desire the continuation of a slave-free territory, others argue that the introduction of slavery is inevitable, and that the territory will eventually join with the southern states. The town itself is a microcosm of this larger ideological struggle, with citizens taking sides and passionately expressing their views. It is on this backdrop that Bob Seton makes his decision to run for the position of marshal in Lawrence. With Mary by his side, offering words of encouragement and support, Seton throws his hat into the ring and announces his candidacy. His opponent, William Cantrell, a respected local schoolteacher, seems at first to be the clear underdog. However, as the campaign heats up, it becomes apparent that Cantrell harbors ambitions far beyond his quiet, unassuming demeanor. While Cantrell presents himself as a pillar of the community, a devoted educator, and a voice for the people, Seton begins to sense that there is more to the man. Cantrell's actions, though seemingly innocuous, reveal a more sinister nature, as he is willing to do whatever it takes to gain power and wealth in the Territory. It becomes clear that Cantrell is driven by a ruthless desire to secure his position and accumulate a personal fortune, regardless of the consequences to the community. Seton's determination and unwavering commitment to fairness and justice serve to alienate him from Cantrell's dark agenda, which only serves to fuel Cantrell's resentment and animosity towards his opponent. Cantrell's ambitions lead him to engage in activities of great deceit, as he begins secretly gathering a group of raiders to run guns into the territory, while terrorizing settlers and extorting goods at gunpoint. Cantrell's transformation from a respected community figure to a ruthless leader of an outlaw gang is nothing short of astonishing. As his grip on the territory tightens, local settlers begin to live in fear of his name, and whispers of Cantrell's corruption spread through the town like wildfire. With his position as marshal slipping further and further out of his grasp, Cantrell seizes the opportunity to align himself with the burgeoning Confederate cause, donning the uniform of a rebel soldier and further solidifying his status as a force to be reckoned with in the Territory. Meanwhile, Bob Seton, bolstered by his love and respect for Mary, finds himself increasingly committed to protecting the residents of Lawrence from Cantrell's tyranny. Undaunted by the danger that lies ahead, Seton stands strong, fueled by a fierce determination to uphold justice and defend the vulnerable citizens of Lawrence. In the midst of this rising tension, the final confrontation between Seton and Cantrell looms, as the two forces clash in a spectacular display of courage and determination. As the fate of the Territory hangs in the balance, the two sides, each driven by a distinct set of values and motivations, move towards a final, cataclysmic showdown. The tension builds, the stakes are raised, and the people of Lawrence prepare themselves for the ultimate test: a test of courage, loyalty, and conviction. Who among them will emerge victorious? And ultimately, what will be the cost of this war-torn Territory's very existence?
