Reminiscent of Jim Carrey's earlier dark comedy, "The Cable Guy," but with a complete role reversal. The most terrifying thing is that even after licking a psychedelic toad, this middle-aged white man's deepest desires and fantasies revolve around Subway! What an empty soul.

The film, centered around the struggles of middle-class white men in their 40s to form friendships, resonated strongly with the local white audience, judging by their uproarious laughter. The protagonist's rather extreme personality, which ultimately dictates his actions, felt like an integral part of the absurd comedy. While the comedic elements successfully masked the protagonist's transformation, their inherently privileged lifestyles made it difficult for me to fully empathize, resulting in a somewhat lukewarm viewing experience.

TIFF2024 #13 | An absurd take on male mid-life crisis and the difficulties of making friends. The subject matter isn't particularly groundbreaking, but Tim Robbins' comedic performance is outstanding. The entire film is shrouded in a bizarre atmosphere, observing the characters from a somewhat alienated perspective. The sympathy for the protagonist remains implicit, avoiding overt sentimentality. With the added boost of the MDFF audience atmosphere, the overall viewing experience is not bad at all.

What a bizarre film. How can such a person with such low emotional intelligence and lack of boundaries be a project manager? Because it's so realistic, I can't find any humor in it, only embarrassment for him. Having someone like that around would be exhausting, and watching this movie is too. A similar film, "Afire," is far better.

Three and a half stars. You think the hallucinogenic toad will take you back a thousand years, but it just leads you to a Subway for a sandwich. So, don't expect anything from anything. People are inherently alone, and there's no cure for life.
