あらすじ
映画『LOVERS』の舞台は9世紀の中国。腐敗した政府は、自由のために戦う反乱組織、飛刀門に対し、容赦ない弾圧を加えていた。物語は、勇敢な戦士、ジン（アンジェイ・ヒラ）が、美しい女性メイ（チャン・ツィイー）と彼女の盲目の従者レオ（ドン・ヨン）を救出するために刑務所に侵入するところから始まる。メイは飛刀門の指導者の娘であることが判明し、多くの男性を魅了する稀有な美貌の持ち主だった。 ジンがメイの脱獄を助けるうちに、二人の間に絆が芽生え、次第にロマンスへと発展していく。しかし、彼らの愛は、彼らを包む危険によって脅かされる。政府は反乱の鎮圧を決意しており、ジンの正体も謎に包まれている。メイの過去もまた、彼女の命を危険にさらす秘密を抱えていた。 二人はやがて飛刀門の隠れ家へとたどり着き、メイの父である盲目の英雄（チェン・ダオミン）と再会する。メイは仲間の反逆者たちと再び繋がり、政府との戦いに身を投じる覚悟を決める一方、自身の運命の結果に立ち向かわなければならない。一方、ジンはメイへの愛と、彼女を危険から守る義務の間で葛藤する。 映画全体を通して、息をのむほど美しい映像が、古代中国の風景や建築物の美しさを捉えている。アクションシーンもまた、俳優たちの見事な武術の腕前を披露しており、卓越した振り付けが施されている。しかし、他の同ジャンルの映画と一線を画しているのは、ジンとメイの間の感動的なロマンスである。 映画のクライマックスは、飛刀門とその指導者の運命が左右される、スリリングで感動的な展開となる。最終的に、『LOVERS』は、圧倒的な逆境に直面した時の愛、忠誠心、犠牲といったテーマを探求する、痛烈で視覚的に美しい映画である。

I originally just put it on as background noise during meals, but I unexpectedly got hooked and watched it all the way through. I finally understand the beauty of Zhang Ziyi and the handsomeness of Takeshi Kaneshiro. Sure, it has its share of plot holes, but the merits outweigh the flaws. I think a 5.6 rating is way too low.
