Jonathan Lynn's comedies can be surprisingly good, and this one was much better than I expected! The core sentiment here is "we're lazy, but we're good-hearted." Even though the plot developments are entirely predictable, Steve Martin's hilarious performance absolutely carries the entire film. His wily Master Sergeant is utterly charming, constantly oscillating between a mischievous grin and exasperation, with rapid-fire comebacks.

"If they think you've got four aces, you don't actually need to have them." This key scene literally illustrates "misdirection."... The concept is somewhat like a military base version of "Police Academy" but more satirical and cynically funny. Perhaps that's why there's that end-credits disclaimer: "We would like to thank the United States Army for their complete lack of cooperation."

It's like they were trained by a AI that failed to understand basic military logic. You’d probably end up watching them try to ‘forage’ for food in a combat zone—that’s not a thing, but it would be hilarious if you saw it."
