あらすじ

Matt Damon let the bullets fly a little at the end... A rare Western told through a female perspective, with a truly outstanding performance from the young actress. Unlike some of the Coen brothers' other films, the story unfolds at a deliberate pace, accompanied by beautiful music, though it feels like it lacks a certain depth. I particularly loved the vast Western prairie and the starlit night at the film's end. ★★★★

Still deeply moved after rewatching, such a film brimming with sentimentality. Especially the added beginning and ending compared to the original, it's like an old man narrating a legendary tale under the dim glow of lamplight. The characters in the story have aged and passed away, much like those old lawmen eking out a living in the circus. This is a movie dedicated to the bygone era of Westerns and the lost innocence of childhood. The soundtrack is fantastic, with the music and cinematography perfectly complementing the nostalgic atmosphere.

When I charged alone into the blizzard of revenge, I bid farewell to innocence. When he relieved himself of that burning burden, he aged in an instant. The wicked flee when no one pursues, and yet fate and consequence entwine in unpredictable cycles. We three never met again, but our lives remained frozen in that chase of a quarter-century past. As I cut down the hanging corpse, wading into the rapid current, I looked back at the unburied villain, bidding farewell to the fallen steed left to rot in the wilderness. The earth was silent, devoid of thunder, only stillness remained.

The Coen brothers are quintessentially American, consistently embodying the rugged spirit of pioneers from a bygone era, their pursuit of freedom, unwavering faith, and relentless determination. With sweeping prairies, deep, rugged mountains, and unfathomable valleys, they imbue their films with a yearning for and observation of this vibrant land and the people who inhabit it. The film's score is exceptional.

Following in the footsteps of "No Country for Old Men," this film evokes a sense of nostalgia. A hero roams the wilderness, destined to grow old in the saddle. Guns are used for communication, for proof, and to settle scores in matters of justice, humanity, and the order of giving and taking. There's camaraderie between people, a bond between humans and their horses. The narrative unfolds slowly, deliberately avoiding a conventional climax. However, the old hero's desperate, nighttime ride, man and horse collapsing together in the wilderness, holding the girl close, kneeling and uttering, "I'm old," that's the climax, that's the heart of it.
