あらすじ

(8/10) The 1985 version is adapted from "The Vampire Bride," and the 2000 version from "Demon Deathchase." Both versions can be found online. (However, the disc translation for the '85 version is quite poor, especially translating "Oni-chan" as "younger brother" is simply unacceptable. Even considering the visuals and character ages, such a mistranslation is inexcusable, right?)

The most handsome vampire hunter of all time. Compared to Yoshiaki Kawajiri's gorgeous 2000 version, the 1985 OVA is also excellent. Adapted from Hideyuki Kikuchi's "Vampire Hunter D: Raiser of Gales," it explores the right and wrong of "purebloods" and "half-breeds" with a style that's influenced by the 80s and a bit more cute. And this version of D might be the most powerful ever. Even with a severed arm and a pierced heart, he can revive and counterattack, defeating the evil Count who has lived for ten thousand years, because he is the son of the Vampire's Sacred Ancestor, the strongest by nature. I admire D even more after this. The romance between him and the heroine is also very well done...

While the visuals of Toyoo Ashida's 1985 version naturally can't compare to the later gorgeous style of Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Tetsuya Komuro's score is surprisingly impressive. Perhaps leaning more towards a medieval-esque western with European-style towns, remnants of ancient mechanical civilization, a fantastical tone, and a sense of apocalyptic dread... in some ways, the world-building of the Vampire Hunter D series shares a certain resemblance to Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.
