Batman & Robin

Batman & Robin

Plot

Batman & Robin is a 1997 superhero film directed by Joel Schumacher, starring George Clooney as Batman and Chris O'Donnell as Robin. The film is the fourth installment in the Batman film series following Tim Burton's vision, but it is considered one of the worst entries in the franchise. As the story unfolds, Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (Chris O'Donnell) are depicted as being at odds, which mirrors their complicated on-screen relationship. Batman's intense and stoic demeanor puts a strain on their dynamic, and Robin feels overlooked and underappreciated. The villains they face in this film are none other than Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman). Mr. Freeze, also known as Dr. Victor Fries, is a cryogenics scientist whose obsession with freeze technology was sparked by his desire to save his terminally ill wife from death. He seeks revenge on Gotham City after Batman foils his plans. Poison Ivy, real name Pamela Isley, is a botanist-turned-villainess who uses her skills to control plants. Both villains are significant enough to be considered standalone antagonists in lesser Batman films. Initially, Batman and Robin appear to be working well together to defeat Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze, but their differences and lack of trust ultimately begin to tear their partnership apart. In this process, Batman faces rivalry from Robin as Robin is able to show off his gymnastics abilities and action hero status while facing their villains. Meanwhile, Batgirl, played by Alicia Silverstone, makes a new addition to the film's protagonist line-up as she too becomes entangled in the thrilling world of crime and protection that Batman and Robin operate in. However, the overall tone of the film cannot decide whether it wants to be light-hearted and comedic, or dark and serious, ultimately leaving it with an unnatural consistency in terms of emotional pace and cohesion. Unfortunately, the on-screen chemistry between Clooney and O'Donnell as Batman and Robin falls short. On the other side, Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy make for more intriguing portrayals with a fair share of cinematic spectacle that allows for better expressions and developments in character. These two villains showcase complexity in their backstory and motivations to make the viewer believe they're not just cruel villains for evil's sake. Mr. Freeze, for instance, wears a cold suit that is intricately linked to his wife's life support system, and Poison Ivy develops in a person with deep connections to the natural environment and who wants to use that in her crusade. Despite several criticisms about the film's direction and the character portrayals of two of the most iconic heroes, Batman & Robin tried to maintain the core idea of a well-rounded hero that appeals to viewers. This effort ultimately contributes to an enjoyable experience that at times offers up highly enthusiastic effects. Nonetheless, the film's polarizing tone results in confusion during the viewing experience. Upon further analysis, the true beauty of Batman & Robin lies not in the execution but rather in its bold aim to bring something fresh to the superhero genre. While it will always remain a troubled addition to the Batman series, the film holds potential of greatness as a visual spectacle. This inconsistency on an overall tone of the film itself implies why the characters' portrayals and portrayals of both Batgirl and the duo's personalities could only end up half-digested in the finished film.

Over-the-top posing and preening galore! Mr. Freeze, driven by a tragic love for his ailing wife; Poison Ivy, a seductively alluring eco-terrorist with a wild heart; Bane, a disappointingly chubby, utterly forgettable brute; and Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, making her debut.

This is a thousand Lu Chuan levels below Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy! So what if three superheroes appear? The latter half of the movie feels like a fake game show performance. The failure of this movie officially marked the end of the previous Batman era! Who would have thought that a few years later, the X-Men series would officially kick off the current comic book movie universe?

5. 0/10. Rewatch, remastered Blu-ray. The fourth installment of the old Batman series. As soon as I saw Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, I knew I had seen this before. But I had completely forgotten the plot and the characters. George Clooney actually played Batman! Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy was pretty good. There are just too many characters, Batman is basically reduced to a cameo role... This movie only has a 3.7 rating on IMDb, but I don't think it's that bad, because this series has always been quite gothic (extravagant). Besides, superhero movies from two decades ago were inherently more naive. Of course, nowadays Marvel movies aren't called naive, they're called family-friendly, haha.

Roster full of big names can't salvage the childish, uninspired and cliché-ridden plot. The only saving grace is the increasing number of bizarre villains. 6.4

Riddled with big names, even the star power can't compensate for the childish, boring and cliché-ridden plot. The only saving grace is the increasingly bizarre and outlandish villains. 6.4

As a kid, I thought this was genuinely terrifying! I ran out of the theater at the very beginning, completely freaked out by the butt shots and oversized codpieces.
