Big Monster on Campus

Plot

Big Monster on Campus is a 1989 American comedy horror film directed by Eric Louzil and starring Joel West, Jonna Lee, and Ron James. The movie follows the story of Steve Maxwell, a college student who undergoes a brain transplant at a local hospital. The plot centers around Steve (played by Joel West), a student at Redlands University, who is thrown into a campus swimming pool with no water in it by a group of fraternity brothers. Luckily, Steve survives the incident, but his life takes an unexpected turn after the event. At the hospital, Steve's parents meet the enigmatic Dr. Halsey, played by Ron James, who convinces them to let him perform a groundbreaking brain transplant surgery on their son. However, there's a twist in the story as Dr. Halsey reveals that he has obtained the brain of notorious serial killer, "Buck," played by Michael DeLorenzo, who has a penchant for violence and murder. Dr. Halsey's motivations for the transplant are shrouded in mystery, leading to speculation among the medical staff. As Steve begins to adjust to his new life post-surgery, he finds himself exhibiting unusual and disturbing behavior. His grades start to slip, and his friends become increasingly concerned about his new personality changes. They begin to notice that Steve has developed a dark side, with a newfound taste for violence and a twisted sense of humor. Steve's behavior becomes more and more erratic, causing his loved ones to suspect that something is terribly wrong. Meanwhile, Steve finds himself developing an inexplicable attraction to Emily, a beautiful student at Redlands University. However, his new personality makes it difficult for him to connect with her on a meaningful level, and Emily seems to sense that something is amiss with Steve. As their relationship continues to blossom, Steve struggles to maintain his newfound dark impulses, leading to a series of increasingly violent incidents around campus. The film's central theme revolves around the idea of identity and the impact of our actions on others. Through Steve's transformation, the movie raises questions about the nature of humanity and the consequences of tampering with the human brain. As Steve's dark side asserts itself, his relationships with those around him begin to fray, ultimately leading to a dramatic showdown between Steve and the people he cares about. Big Monster on Campus employs a blend of dark humor and horror to explore the implications of Steve's brain transplant. The film's tone is light-hearted and comedic at times, particularly in its portrayal of the eccentric faculty at Redlands University. However, as Steve's behavior becomes more erratic and violent, the movie shifts towards a more serious and disturbing tone. The film's climax features a showdown between Steve and his friends, who are determined to stop him before he commits a heinous crime. In the end, Steve's dark personality ultimately consumes him, and he becomes a full-fledged monster. The movie concludes with a poignant commentary on the dangers of playing with the boundaries of human nature and the devastating consequences that can result from such actions. Big Monster on Campus may not be a well-known horror film, but its exploration of identity and the blurred lines between humanity and monstrosity make it a thought-provoking addition to the genre. The movie's blend of dark humor and horror provides an entertaining take on the classic 'killer transplant' trope, making it a must-watch for fans of the 1980s horror-comedy genre.
