Plot

In the small town of Bay Mills, Pennsylvania, a sense of unease and foreboding settles over the Graham family. Graham Hess, a former Catholic priest, lives on their farm alongside his brother Merrill and younger brother Morgan. Morgan, a teenager with a passion for science fiction, has been fascinated by extraterrestrial life after discovering a UFO sighting on a video while surfing the internet. Graham and his wife, Carol, share a daughter, Morgan's younger sister Bo. Tragically, the family lost their second child, who died as an infant. Since then, Graham's grief has made him increasingly distant from his family. His younger brother Merrill and the rest of the family try to keep his spirits high, but a growing sense of isolation and loss threatens their relationships. Graham's quiet life as a farmer is disrupted by mysterious crop circle formations appearing in his fields. At first, Graham assumes that these formations must have been made by a prankster or possibly by the local teenagers who live near the farm. However, the increasingly complex patterns suggest that this could be something much more extraordinary going on. As the circle patterns expand and continue to appear in the fields, the townsfolk start to speculate about the possible origins of these symbols. Graham dismisses theories, convinced that it is probably just a prankster at work. Merrill tries to convince Graham that these formations are more than just a joke and might be linked to an otherworldly phenomenon, which starts to worry Merrill. The mysterious appearance of these symbols becomes a recurring theme throughout their small town, generating confusion and dread among the locals. Morgan tries to keep a journal about these events, suspecting that they might be connected to his fascination with extraterrestrial life. His research on the subject fuels his imagination and sparks an obsession with the crop circle formations. His interest prompts him to believe that this occurrence might signal some kind of cosmic event. Graham is eventually faced with a traumatic event: he discovers that Carol, who is still grieving the death of their infant, has gone to a nearby store. While she is out, a sudden and mysterious event occurs: the crop circle formation appears on their land in an unprecedented and more disturbing form, which includes a dark, mysterious circle that starts to emit a low hum. The formation seems to come from outside the land. Graham realizes that the crop circle formation might be pointing to the presence of something extraterrestrial. Fearing the worst for his family, Graham decides to prepare his family by arming himself with shotguns, setting up watchposts, and making his farm as secure as possible. Graham's decision to take matters into his own hands creates tension within the family and fuels further conflict within his relationship with Carol, who feels increasingly scared and uncertain about the mysterious occurrences. Meanwhile, Morgan, who had grown accustomed to the idea of the presence of aliens on Earth, now finds himself at odds with Graham about what he knows and feels. As more unsettling events unfold on their farm, Graham's sense of responsibility towards his family grows. When it becomes apparent that the aliens have arrived on Earth, Graham feels an overwhelming sense of duty to protect his family at any cost. In the climactic final act of the film, Graham and his family are confronted with the harsh reality of their situation. It is finally revealed that the aliens are indeed the true creators of the crop circle formations. In the film's conclusion, Graham is faced with a moral dilemma: he must decide where his faith lies and how he should interact with these extraterrestrial beings.
