The New Mutants

Plot
In a world where mutations are a reality, five young individuals have found themselves trapped in the sinister Institution for Higher Learning, a secret facility designed to harness the powers of these young mutants. This is the world of The New Mutants, a gripping and suspenseful superhero thriller that delves into the darker aspects of a world on the cusp of chaos. The story revolves around four young mutants, whom we meet in separate introductory scenes that showcase their unique abilities. There's Illyana Rasputin, a Russian-born mutant with the ability to manipulate teleportation, which she uses to escape her home. Dani Moonstar, a Native American girl, who can induce visions, but struggles to control her powers, often experiencing terrifying visions. Rahne Sinclair, a Scottish mutant, who can transform into a wolf, is hiding her true identity as a Christian and struggles with her newfound feral nature. Sam Guthrie, a Cajun mutant, who can generate powerful explosions using the earth, has a troubled past that has led to his incarceration. Finally, there's Roberto da Costa, a Brazilian mutant, known as Sunspot, who can harness energy from the sun, often using it to control his surroundings. Upon their arrival at the Institution, the five young mutants are introduced to the mysterious Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who claims to be there to help them understand and control their powers. She explains that the Institution has developed a new therapy, designed specifically for mutants like them. The "therapy" is, in reality, an experiment aimed at eradicating their powers, or as Dr. Reyes puts it, to "cure" them of their "mutations." As the story progresses, alliances begin to form between the five young mutants. They bond over their shared experiences as outcasts and the isolation they face at the Institution. Illyana, the group's self-proclaimed leader, emerges as a key figure in their struggle to understand and accept their powers. As they begin to bond with each other, they start to realize that the Institution is not what it seems. The "cure" is, in fact, an attempt to suppress their powers, rendering them helpless against their foes, or worse, to harvest their powers to fuel the Institution's sinister ambitions. Meanwhile, the young mutants begin to experience terrifying visions and nightmares, fueled by Dani's growing instability and Illyana's dark past. Their fragile mental state is further strained by the cruel experiments they endure at the Institution, where they are subjected to a form of mind control that makes them question their own reality. As their bond strengthens, however, they begin to see through the facade and rebel against the Institution's sinister plans. Dani, in particular, faces a crisis of faith and identity as she grapples with her visions and her sense of self. As she struggles to understand her powers, she begins to lose control, experiencing increasingly disturbing visions that blur the lines between dreams and reality. Her fragile mental state puts her and those around her in danger as she becomes more unpredictable, threatening to unravel the fragile alliances formed within the group. Rahne, on the other hand, grapples with her inner demons as she tries to reconcile her Christian faith with her newfound werewolf nature. As the story progresses, she becomes increasing withdrawn and isolated, struggling to come to terms with the beast within herself. Her bond with Sam, who sees her as more than just a werewolf, brings a glimmer of hope that she can overcome her inner strife and reclaim her humanity. As tensions rise within the Institution, the young mutants realize that they must escape their confinement and take control of their lives. United by their desire for freedom and self-determination, they hatch a plan to break free from the Institution's confines. Led by Illyana, who has a personal vendetta against the Institution, they put their unique abilities to the test in a daring bid for freedom. In a gripping climax, the four mutants join forces to confront the sinister forces that have held them captive for so long. As they fight to secure their freedom, they are forced to confront their own demons and fears, and to learn to trust one another if they hope to triumph. The outcome of their battle is far from certain, adding a layer of tension and suspense that keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. The New Mutants is a gripping, suspenseful film that explores the complexities of adolescence and the struggles of self-discovery. By focusing on the individual journeys of four young mutants, it offers a nuanced and compassionate portrayal of teenagers in crisis, highlighting the emotional turmoil and vulnerability that often accompany adolescence. At the same time, the film raises important questions about the power of identity, community, and self-acceptance, reminding viewers that true strength lies in embracing one's true self, even in the face of adversity. Through its rich, atmospheric visuals and compelling narrative, The New Mutants brings to life a thrilling and unsettling world, reimagining the X-Men franchise in a darker, more intimate light. This is a story about young people on the cusp of chaos, struggling to find their place in a world that is rapidly losing control. The result is a film that is both a thrilling action-adventure and a poignant coming-of-age drama, a true testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming odds.
Reviews
Steven
A mutant horror movie – with such a promising premise, the final product feels so carelessly made. The story is incredibly simple and uninteresting, all the characters are paper-thin, and it's hard to even understand their superpowers. What a waste of a great concept.

The first half is bearable, but the more it goes on, the more elements they pile on... Superhero, teen, LGBTQ, horror, fantasy... but the latter half is simply unbearable... I can only say that the kiss by the tomb under the dome was filmed with a rather innocent vibe, and there's a trace of the director's previous work, "The Fault in Our Stars." Disney's decision not to include this film in the X-Men series is absolutely the right one. It's such a shame to waste this group of talented young actors.
Harmony
A sapphic film about a boogeyman with a bear of a mind and a girl prone to puppy-dog excitement.
Tessa
If you're just watching for Anya Taylor-Joy, you won't be disappointed.
Owen
This screenwriter must be a New Mutant themselves. They definitely have a superpower when it comes to writing terrible scripts.
