Morbius
Michael Morbius, a renowned biochemist, lives with a constant reminder of his mortal fate. Stricken by a rare blood disorder that has ravaged his body, leaving him weak and desperate for a cure. With the medical community's best efforts failing to find a solution, Morbius turns to unorthodox methods to alleviate his suffering. Joining forces with his close friend, Martine Bancroft, and a brilliant scientist, Floyd Wright, Morbius sets out to defy the conventional wisdom of medicine. Developing an experimental treatment that incorporates extracts from the venom of a specific species of bat, he hopes to harness the curative properties of this extraordinary serum. Upon administering the treatment, Morbius initially experiences a dramatic improvement in his condition. Gradually, he notices his strength increasing, and his vitality returning. Joyous and rejuvenated, he sees this promising response as a means to aid others suffering from the same afflictions. Emboldened by his perceived success, Morbius decides to trial the treatment on various patients with similar afflictions. As the subjects demonstrate positive results, similar to his own experience, the news spreads quickly, and a spark of hope is ignited among the medical community. With these heartening developments, Morbius feels his gamble was truly worthwhile, having given others a glimmer of salvation. However, as time progresses and the subjects exposed to the serum undergo further evaluation, a darker reality starts to emerge. The effects of the treatment begin to manifest themselves in unfortunate and unsettling ways. While it granted them seemingly supernatural capabilities such as nighttime enhanced vision and accelerated healing abilities, it seems to come at the cost of suppressing their emotions and bestowing erratic, and often hostile, mood swings on them. As Morbius delves deeper into the mechanisms underlying these modifications, he gradually uncovers disturbing associations between the serum's interactions within their systems and humanity's collective fear and aggression. Observing how even those infected individuals appear increasingly prone to violence, irascibility, and loss of human empathy; Morbius becomes perturbed by the unsettling verdict of his actions. As an unsettling existential crisis drives his introspection, Morbius comes to an unenviable realization; the peril posed by the modified concoction might be far worse than the sickness it initially intends to cure. This stark assessment forces Morbius to conclude the gamble that initially offered respite, and the grim evidence his choice to abandon the more cautious and conventional route has brought. In doing so, the film propels towards a somber, turbulent climax as Morbius struggles with the dehumanizing potential of his own creation. Having seen his endeavor to alleviate suffering give rise to monstrosity, Morbius confronts the unthinkable challenges of his next decision – surrender his new, unnatural life, one that gradually dehumanized him in its pursuit of remade humanity as an end; or continuing the present trajectory of catastrophic terror for him and others, to forever remain outside of humanity itself. The burden of the potential costs weighs heavily upon him, deepening the divide between being a philanthropic hope for the medical revolution, and a terrible, deadly menace that humanity itself justly fears as much as the initially debilitating malady that stood in Morbius' path towards his unguided revival.
