Considering how awful the first one was, the improvement in this sequel is astronomical, even if it all stems from sheer stupidity. It's completely commercialized, but at least that leads to a more well-rounded story. Even the sexualization feels more natural and appealing. Where the first film superficially explored the fractured relationship of a couple, this one brings together a group of college friends reuniting after five years, naturally leading to more hidden agendas and conflicts. It explores how the goodwill within humanity can both help and consume people, and it manages to convey that meaning. The semi-open ending is also a nice touch.

The sequel immediately shapes up much better with proper commercial operation. However, the premise is problematic again. A group of people jumps into the water and can't get back on the boat – that's just incredibly stupid. Seriously, have none of these people ever watched synchronized swimming?

As the group of friends is trapped in the middle of the ocean, the film's claustrophobic atmosphere and the sharks lurking beneath the surface create a suffocating sense of dread. The movie expertly explores the human psyche under extreme pressure, showcasing how relationships can quickly turn toxic when survival is at stake.
