Practicing for a visit to the landing beaches. Unexpectedly, from the clear characterizations of individuals from higher ranks to soldiers, to the complex progression of multiple roles and storylines, and the large-scale scene management, it's in no way inferior to war epics made half a century later. The French assault on Ouistreham even utilizes a trendy panoramic overhead long shot, a technique employed long before post-production compositing. If these four directors, along with contemporaries like David Lean, were around today, would the film industry have had an even more impressive start?

Finally watched the whole thing from beginning to end. Three hours almost doesn't feel long enough. If I could give it six stars, I wouldn't hesitate.

It's hard to say if the panoramic approach works perfectly, especially considering the film's age. I didn't even finish it as a kid. But no other storytelling method quite matches this kind of immersive experience.

"The Founding of a Republic" was heavily influenced by this film. It features large-scale scenes, a grand subject matter, and almost a hundred celebrity cameos. A budget of ten million was rare for a black-and-white film. The extensive use of location shooting and aerial photography is something even Spielberg would envy. The film intricately weaves together multiple perspectives: from high-ranking officers to ordinary soldiers of the Allied American, Allied British, and German forces, as well as the ordinary people of France. "He's dead, I'm crippled, you're lost; that's war, I suppose."

Released in 1962, the film's grand scale remains impressive even today, with dozens of characters brought vividly to life. It's a testament to how film technology has advanced, perhaps in contrast to the perceived decline of humanity.
