Hong Gil-dong is a free spirit with an unpredictable and quirky nature that often results in hilarious situations. This unpredictability frequently throws his partners into disarray, yet they remain loyal to him due to his unmatched detective skills and the satisfaction of seeing a case solved. This particular trait of his has led people to nickname him 'Choi Kang-ta' or the Phantom Detective, whose existence is shrouded in mystery, allowing him to operate with unparalleled freedom and stealth. As the Phantom Detective, Gil-dong takes on cases from the high-end citizens of the city. He has been hired by a mysterious client whose target is Seo Jin, a man with connections to the city's influential elite. The stakes of this case escalate quickly when Gil-dong discovers that Seo Jin is more than just a high-society businessman – he is deeply entrenched in the dark underbelly of the city. As Gil-dong's quest deepens, he discovers more and more disturbing information about Seo Jin's disappearance and the depth of the corruption that is festering beneath the city's surface. Gil-dong's journey eventually leads him back to his past, uncovering a long-buried family secret that threatens to upend everything he thought he knew about himself and his family. It becomes apparent that Gil-dong's family was embroiled in the very same conspiracy that he is now trying to expose.
