The Voice (2011) is a South Korean horror-fantasy mystery film directed by Kim Hong-seong. The movie revolves around a talented young singer, Sunny, played by Kim Ok-bin, who practices her singing after hours in her high school to pursue her dreams. Unbeknownst to Sunny, a group of students who were jealous of her incredible vocal talent, including the school's popular and manipulative student council president, Sung-kyung (Kim Hyo-jin), decide to murder her. However, her body inexplicably disappears from the scene. Her spirit, now trapped between the world of the living and the dead, remains at the school, but she is unable to express herself physically. Her best friend, Eun-hee (Chu Ja-hyun), is the only one who is able to hear Sunny's voice, a high-pitched whisper that seems to emanate from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. At first, Eun-hee is unaware of the true nature of the voice and thinks it is just Sunny trying to communicate with her through the school's intercom system. As time passes, Eun-hee starts to realize that something is amiss and begins to suspect that her friend has met with foul play. Despite the eerie circumstances, she becomes determined to uncover the truth behind Sunny's disappearance and death. Along the way, Eun-hee starts to experience terrifying supernatural events that make her question her own sanity. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the school is a hotbed of jealousy, manipulation, and deceit. The student council president, Sung-kyung, and her cohorts are ruthless in their pursuit of power and recognition, and they will stop at nothing to eliminate anyone who stands in their way. The school's principal and administrators appear to be complicit in the events, either through their own malfeasance or ignorance, allowing the true extent of the tragedy to remain hidden. Meanwhile, Eun-hee becomes increasingly obsessed with uncovering the truth about her friend's death and starts to investigate the mysterious voice that she is hearing. As Eun-hee delves deeper into the mystery, she discovers a dark and sinister motive behind Sunny's murder. She learns that the school's administration and the student council president have been colluding to conceal the truth and to prevent anyone from getting in the way of their plans. Throughout the film, the director masterfully manipulates tension and suspense to create a creepy atmosphere that propels the viewer towards the climax. The plot twists are both unexpected and inevitable, making it impossible not to be drawn into the mystery. In the end, Eun-hee finally uncovers the truth behind Sunny's death and is forced to confront the masterminds behind the tragedy. With her newfound determination, she is able to break free from the school's oppressive forces and bring the responsible parties to justice. The movie ends on a hopeful note, but not without a sense of unease, as the viewer is left to ponder the darker aspects of human nature that led to the tragic events that unfolded. The Voice is a gripping and unsettling horror film that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end. With its thought-provoking themes and eerie atmosphere, it is a must-see for fans of the genre.
