Intrigue

Dhoom (Dhh) is a 2005 Bollywood fantasy-comedy film, the remake of the South Indian film 'Dhoom' produced by the duo Subhash Kapoor. Directed by Ujjwal Kashyap, with an ensemble cast including Vivek Oberoi, Shreya Saran, and Eisha Deol, the film revolves around the themes of friendship and the power of imagination. The movie primarily focuses on the trio of friends, Rohan (Vivek Oberoi), Ramesh (Kunal Khemu), and Pratish (Upen Patel), struggling to pass their school exams. They are under immense pressure from their parents and peers, with each exam seeming like a monumental challenge. One of them suggests that the only way to guarantee success is to have a miracle happen for them. Their conversation eventually leads them to a chance encounter with a magician named Rakesh Mahadkar (played by Rimi Sen's brother, Arijit Sen's friend in reality though, Rimi Sen does appear in film), who is more of a prankster than an actual magician. The boys, however, are convinced that seeking help from Rakesh can bring about a change in their fortunes. To their surprise, Rakesh agrees to their proposal. He decides to 'magically' help them pass their exams. Using his misadventures, Rakesh manipulates each of the examinations, making it seem that the boys have passed with flying colors. The trio is overjoyed at their 'miraculous' success and are convinced that Rakesh's magic is responsible. However, things start going awry when Rohan, Ramesh, and Pratish's grades start mysteriously changing. Although at first it seems like a dream come true, it is revealed that Rakesh is using various means to manipulate each of the examinations. In one instance, a teacher is made to grade an examination incorrectly, which seems miraculous, but the trio is completely unaware of Rakesh's involvement. They are initially thrilled to see their 'miraculous' success, while Rakesh takes full advantage of their naivety. Meanwhile, the story shifts to a parallel narrative of a high school romance between Rohan and a classmate named Shreya (played by Aashita Dhawan's lookalike, Eisha Deol, also credited as Aashita's lookalike). The romantic subplot serves as a distraction to the trio's main problem of passing their exams. Shreya turns out to be more interested in her studies than Rohan's magic-filled adventures. However, their secret is eventually exposed to their friends and classmates after they notice that something unusual is going on at school. It turns out that one of the boys has been caught cheating on their exam and inadvertently exposes the trio's secret to everyone else. Their friends and classmates are shocked to find out that Rakesh's 'magic' was actually a result of his manipulation, leaving them stunned and embarrassed. The climax of the film revolves around the trio having to come up with a plan to cover up Rakesh's involvement in their exams. They concoct an implausible story, suggesting that Rakesh was indeed a legitimate magician and his 'magic' was genuine. They even manage to persuade the school principal to give them a second chance to reappear for the exams, hoping to pass them this time without Rakesh's interference. As the story winds down, Rakesh becomes despondent, realizing that his 'magic' has backfired and that his prankster methods have not worked in the end. However, when the trio is eventually forced to take their actual exam, Rakesh decides to help them out genuinely for the first time by giving them advice and encouragement. His efforts ultimately pay off as Rohan, Ramesh, and Pratish are able to pass their exams with hard work, learning a valuable lesson about staying grounded and believing in themselves. The film wraps up with a message that friendship and hard work are the only keys to ultimate success, not relying on external factors like magic or miracles.
