The Live Ghost

Intrigue

The Live Ghost, a 1934 comedy film directed by William Beaudine and starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, revolves around the duo's misadventures as professional "sham" sailors. The movie begins with Stan and Ollie as working-class men who live in a small seaside town. They spend their days working at the local fish market, trying to make ends meet. Their mundane lives are disrupted by a sea captain, who approaches them and offers a lucrative opportunity. He tells the boys that they can make a sizeable amount of money by helping him to 'shanghai' a crew at the local bar. In exchange for their participation, the captain promises them a dollar per recruit. The boys, ever the schemers and opportunists, agree to participate in the ruse. Stan and Ollie put into motion their plan by luring unsuspecting sailors at the local bar. They successfully recruit several men, who unwittingly sign on to join the captain's crew. However, the tables are turned as the two con artists are approached by the captain himself, who now wants to recruit them into the crew. The boys are unaware of the captain's intentions and end up getting themselves shanghaied as well. Upon realizing their predicament, Stan and Ollie are faced with a harsh reality: they are now part of the very crew they were earlier trying to recruit for the captain. The other sailors, recognizing the trickery they suffered at the hands of the two men, vow to take revenge on Stan and Ollie. The live-action sequence that follows showcases the duo being subjected to the harsh conditions of life onboard a ship. They are forced to perform tasks that they are utterly unskilled in, including swabbing the decks, hauling heavy anchors, and battling inclement weather. As the two men struggle to cope with their new reality, their camaraderie and teamwork become necessary tools for survival. Meanwhile, a beautiful woman named Helen (played by Thelma Todd) falls in love with Stan, and it becomes clear that their romance serves as a means for Stan to escape his predicament. With Helen's help and some creative plotting on Stan and Ollie's part, the two men concoct an elaborate escape plan, which ultimately leads to their rescue. The Live Ghost features several slapstick comedy sequences, including an impressive boat chase scene and a comedic scene where Stan and Ollie inadvertently start a fire on board the ship. These sequences are reminiscent of the duo's classic film, Way Out West, which featured a similar boat chase scene. In the end, the captain's ill-fated plans for a successful voyage come to a grinding halt. The live-action sequence culminates in a dramatic and action-packed sequence where Stan and Ollie make their daring escape and are reunited with Helen. With their romance cemented, the two men are able to leave their ordeal behind and start a new life free from the harsh realities of sea life. The Live Ghost offers a classic tale of two men caught up in their own brand of chaotic circumstances, only to manage their exit via wit, teamwork, and a dash of romance. As fans of classic comedy would expect, the film features the expected mix of slapstick humor, clever plot twists, and hilarious performances from Stan and Ollie.
