Plot

In the sixteenth century, Joseon Dynasty is experiencing a period of rapid growth and development under the wise and visionary leadership of King Sejong, its fourth ruler. With the vision of transforming his country into a superior force in East Asia, King Sejong aims to modernize military technology, promote education, and strengthen national unity. However, his aspirations for a more progressive Korea are hindered by the rigid traditions and the influence of the Yangban class, which consists of Korea's aristocratic elite. Jang Yeong-sil, a low-ranking astronomer, enters the royal court with a burning desire to prove himself as a worthy scholar and a talented scientist. Born into a family of modest status, Jang's humble background often puts him at a disadvantage in court politics. Nevertheless, he displays exceptional intelligence and exceptional knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, and engineering. Recognizing his potential, King Sejong takes Jang under his wing, assigning him the project of designing and constructing a new astronomical instrument, known as the Gyeongbokgung observatory. Despite facing intense opposition from the conservative-minded eunuchs and officials, who are suspicious of Yeong-sil's low social status, King Sejong firmly believes in the importance of innovation and progress. As Yeong-sil begins working on the observatory, he also devises new military technologies, including the introduction of a more precise astronomical method to increase the trajectory accuracy of the arrow, as well as gunpowder. The Gyeongbokgung observatory, a colossal structure in the heart of Seoul, becomes not only an instrument for astronomical observations but also a symbol of the ruling regime's commitment to knowledge and development. Under King Sejong's patronage, Yeong-sil makes groundbreaking discoveries using the new astronomical tool, including the creation of a new calendar system based on the exact time of sunrise and sunset. As a result of Yeong-sil's brilliant work, the country experiences rapid advancements in science, astronomy, and military technology. However, this newfound prosperity creates tension between the ruling class and the emerging middle class. The Yangban, fearing their decline due to these advancements, start to resist the progressive efforts of the king. In an attempt to consolidate his power, King Sejong establishes a new class, the "Munban," comprising scholars, scientists, and officials who support his progressive agenda. With a keen mind for governance and strategy, Yeong-sil is instrumental in formulating this plan. By introducing social mobility, meritocracy, and talent as the basis for career advancement, King Sejong seeks to promote the social mobility of talented individuals, regardless of their birth. However, these developments spark fierce opposition from conservative quarters, with the Yangban class accusing the king of uprooting the traditional values and hierarchy of Joseon society. The tension between the two groups heightens as the ruling class seeks to maintain their social standing and resist any perceived threat from the emerging middle class. Yeong-sil finds himself at the center of this battle, caught between his loyalty to the king's vision and the danger posed by the Yangban's entrenched position. Meanwhile, the king's efforts to assert his authority over the conservative elite lead to a series of conflicts that strain the relationship between the royal court and the nobility. Amidst all the turmoil, Yeong-sil's scientific breakthroughs demonstrate the real strength of Korea and prove that innovative thinking can provide the edge needed to achieve national prosperity. Throughout this turbulent period in Joseon history, King Sejong remains steadfast in his pursuit of knowledge and modernization, demonstrating unwavering support for Jang Yeong-sil and the vision of a more progressive Korea. The film's title, 'Forbidden Dream,' thus reflects not just Yeong-sil's impossible-seeming ascent to the top but also the dream of establishing a country that is both powerful and prosperous. Ultimately, the 'Forbidden Dream' of King Sejong materializes through a combination of the monarch's vision, the determination of Jang Yeong-sil, and the collective efforts of Korea's scientists, scholars, and innovators. Their groundbreaking work leaves an indelible mark on Korean history, transforming the nation into a bastion of progress, learning, and resilience in the face of adversity. And though the film is a historical drama, it reminds us that courage and perseverance are essential in achieving even the most impossible-seeming goals.
