The action is definitely leveled up from the second movie; maze? What maze? This installment takes the crown for most plot holes in the series. Seriously: What kind of bomb can instantly demolish a wall hundreds of feet high? How does someone survive a car plummeting from that height without a scratch? What kind of reinforced glass shatters with a single hit? The supposedly impenetrable headquarters is infiltrated and escaped with laughable ease. And that ending – leveling an entire city to save a few dozen people while killing tens of thousands – is it dystopia or just plain misanthropic?

Only those chosen by fate can survive, all the efforts of others are in vain. This movie is essentially pessimistic, offering little hope. The capable and the incapable are all consumed by self-interest, and in the end, the only one who wanted to save everyone dies. I truly love Teresa, I wholeheartedly ship Teresa and Thomas as a couple.

Some say this film lacks a maze, but I strongly disagree. Aren't the director's, writers', protagonist's, and antagonist's thought processes mazes themselves? They're labyrinths with only entrances and no exits; once you're in, you're stuck. Until the very last moment, you have no clue what they're thinking, and even after watching, you're still left wondering what was going on in their heads.

Both the second and third installments explain the mysteries behind the first and continue the story's development, but they stray further and further from the maze theme, and there aren't any brilliant new ideas. Thomas's harem is constantly losing members; he saves one, then loses a few, saves one, then loses a few. My heart aches QAQ.

The deaths feel forced and contrived. Newt's demise comes down to mere minutes when they could have administered the serum much earlier! And Teresa, she just needed to make one last leap but instead stood there waiting for her death? Plus, rescuing the kids using hooks to lift them away feels repetitive and lacks originality. The joyful and peaceful ending feels incredibly out of place. When you think about it, they didn't really accomplish anything significant. The Flare is still spreading, the people who could create the cure are gone, and what can the main character possibly achieve with just one vial of serum?
