Norma

あらすじ
In Norma, the opera by Vincenzo Bellini, the titular character, Norma, is a Druid priestess who has fallen in love with Pollione, a Roman proconsul, and has borne him two children. However, their love is doomed from the start, as Norma is bound by a sacred contract to her fellow Druids, led by Ortland, who seeks to preserve their ancient traditions. The story takes place in ancient Britain, where the Druids have built a sacred temple on a remote island. Norma, with her exceptional beauty and intelligence, serves as the high priestess of the temple, while Pollione, as the Roman commander, has come to the island to crush the Druid rebellion and destroy their sacred temples. As the story unfolds, we learn that Norma has been carrying on a secret love affair with Pollione for years, and has even borne him children. However, their love is constantly threatened by the danger posed by Pollione's duties as a Roman commander and Norma's duty to the Druids. One major obstacle to their love is the arrival of Adalgisa, a young and beautiful Druid who seeks to join the temple and become a part of the Druidic community. Adalgisa catches Pollione's eye, and despite his initial reservations, he begins to develop feelings for her. This adds to the tensions within Norma, who becomes increasingly isolated and desperate as Pollione's attention turns away from her. As the conflict escalates, Norma learns that Pollione has declared war on the Druids and will soon arrive on the island with a Roman army. Realizing that the Druid temple will be destroyed and their people killed if the Romans arrive, Norma knows that she must act quickly to save them. In a desperate bid to protect her people, Norma turns to the only ally she has left: her fellow priestess and friend, Adalgisa. Despite her initial reluctance, Adalgisa agrees to help Norma, but only if Norma agrees to give her hand in marriage. Norma reluctantly agrees, and the two of them concoct a plan to save the Druid temple and their people. As the Roman army approaches, Norma and Adalgisa put their plan into action. They disguise themselves as Roman prisoners and pretend to surrender to Pollione, but in reality, they are working to sabotage the Roman army's plans and allow the Druids to escape. Meanwhile, Pollione, unaware of Norma's true intentions, orders the Roman army to prepare for battle. However, as the battle rages on, Norma and Adalgisa are able to sneak past the Romans and destroy the temple's secret passage, which leads to the hidden treasure of the Druids. As the temple begins to burn down, Norma and Adalgisa realize that their plan has been successful, and the Druids will be able to escape. However, in the chaos of the battle, Norma's children are killed, and she is left alone and heartbroken. In the final scene, Norma and Adalgisa confront each other, and it becomes clear that Adalgisa's plan to save the Druids has come at a terrible cost. With a heavy heart, Norma realizes that she must pay the ultimate price for her actions and kill Adalgisa in revenge for her own family's death. The opera ends with Norma's death, but not before she is able to see the destruction of the Roman army and the safety of the Druids. Despite the tragic ending, Norma's sacrifice is seen as a heroic act, and she is remembered as a brave and unyielding champion of her people.
