The biggest problem with *Older Gods* is its failure to create a sense of dread associated with the ancient deities. The methods employed by the evil gods and their cult are too stereotypical: stalking, tailing, scattering dead birds around the house, and verbally threatening to kill the protagonist’s family. However, these actions lack a tangible threat to the protagonist (the audience doesn't feel threatened), and the latter half relies heavily on musical cues to evoke emotion, resulting in a lack of genuine, bone-chilling horror. The story's focus on the emotional bond between the protagonist and their friend, aiming to highlight the power of genuine emotion against evil, feels misplaced in a cosmic horror setting. With the oppressive atmosphere lacking, the characters’ actions come across as overly sentimental and the performances as self-indulgent.
