A Werewolf Boy

Plot

'A Werewolf Boy' is a South Korean fantasy romance film released in 2012, directed by Cho Young-jung and written by Go Eun-mi and Jo Myeong-jik. The film stars Park Jin-woo and Song Joong-ki. In 1958, an orphan boy named Jin (played by Song Joong-ki) lives in the countryside. Jin appears to be a normal young boy, but he possesses supernatural abilities – he has incredible strength, speed, and agility, but is also a werewolf. He is found by a young girl named Ilseong, who takes him under her wing, and they spend a lot of time together. As they grow older, their bond deepens, and Ilseong, now older, remembers her life with Jin fondly. 47 years have passed, and the now elderly Ilseong (played by Park Jin-woo) returns to her childhood country cottage after receiving a mysterious phone call. As she settles back into her old home, she starts experiencing strange, vivid dreams that take her back to her childhood memories with Jin. These flashbacks reveal a beautiful, yet often turbulent, life with the orphan boy they both adored. It is during these flashback scenes that the audience witnesses Jin's unique and supernatural abilities as a werewolf. However, they also discover his kind, sensitive side - as seen through Ilseong's reminiscences of their time together. They shared laughter, adventures, and deep moments of affection. Jin, despite being an outsider, had been able to form genuine bonds with Ilseong and her family, bringing a sense of joy into their lives. As Ilseong delves deeper into her memories, she realises the depth of her emotions for Jin. The two share a profound connection, which transcends time and age. But the world, with all its cruelty and judgment, forced Jin to flee the small town, leaving Ilseong heartbroken. This painful separation still haunts her to this day. As the elderly Ilseong continues to reminisce about Jin, she starts to feel the weight of her advancing years. The pain and longing that she has bottled up for decades now threatens to consume her. However, the film's portrayal of Ilseong's relationship with Jin leaves the audience with a sense of the enduring power of love, a love that defied time, age, and reality. In a way, the film becomes a tribute to the unbreakable love between Ilseong and Jin, a love that, even though they were separated by time and circumstances, never truly faded. Even in the twilight years of her life, Ilseong is reminded of Jin and the bond they shared. This serves as a poignant reminder that memories, especially those we cherish the most, have the power to revive and transform us. 'A Werewolf Boy' is a poignant story of love, loss, and longing that lingers with the audience long after the credits roll. With a blend of nostalgia, fantasy, and romance, this South Korean film offers an enchanting and poignant portrayal of the unbreakable human spirit. Through its captivating narrative, 'A Werewolf Boy' shows us that love can transcend even the most extraordinary circumstances, making it a must-watch for anyone who believes in the transformative power of love and memory.
