Against the Sun

Plot

Against the Sun is a 1952 American war drama film, directed by John Sturges and starring Corinne Calvet, and Rock Hudson. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Gordon Williams, a U.S. Navy aviator who survived a similar ordeal. The film tells the story of Lieutenant Chuck Larson, a US Navy Avenger torpedo bomber pilot, played by Burgess Meredith, and his crew of bombardier Lieutenant Joe Costa, played by John Garfield, and radioman and engineer Lieutenant-Commander Jim Barnes, played by James Stewart. The three men were part of a scouting mission in the Pacific Theatre of World War II, tasked with locating a Japanese aircraft carrier. As they approach the target, their plane, a Navy Avenger, develops engine trouble, forcing the crew to ditch the aircraft in the ocean. Against the backdrop of intense war, the fate of the crew seems sealed when they find themselves stuck on a small lifeboat with limited supplies – no food, no water, and no communication tools to signal for help. The situation is made more challenging by a severe storm that rages across the ocean, leaving them exposed to the mercy of the elements. Chuck Larson assumes command, as is customary, in order to make the most crucial decisions to ensure their survival. However, his leadership is put to the test as tensions rise within the group due to the harsh conditions they face. Joe Costa and Jim Barnes are equally important to the story as they bring their own perspectives, which lead to disagreement and conflict with Chuck. Chuck's leadership is put under scrutiny as he struggles to maintain the morale and hope of his crewmates. This strain is exacerbated by the crew's dwindling supply of food and water, and their dwindling chances of rescue as they are left adrift at the mercy of the winds and currents. This strain causes some disagreements, some are caused by the leadership style of Chuck, some are based on the harsh and unforgiving conditions that they are in. As the men try to survive their ordeal, they start to turn on each other, and the tensions rise. This internal conflict is mirrored by their desperate attempts to signal for help, including the construction of makeshift signs and the use of mirrors to redirect the sun's rays towards any potential observers. Their resilience is tested when a shark appears, drawing on their remaining energy to fend off the threat. The movie is not just a survival story; it's also an epic battle of human endurance, as these three characters face their own personal demons in the isolation of the ocean. As the crew of their Avenger struggles to survive, Chuck Larson undergoes a transformation, moving away from an individual focused leader towards one who prioritizes the survival of his crew-mates over his own self-preservation. However, Joe Costa struggles to come to terms with his own part in their predicament, and Jim Barnes provides a voice of reason and sanity, helping both men navigate this turbulent journey. Throughout the grueling battle of survival, Chuck and the men are forced to confront their own weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Chuck must confront the possibility that he may never see his wife again, and that he may fail in his duty to protect his crew members, and ultimately their country. In this isolated, unforgiving environment, their lives are reduced to the ultimate question of their very existence. The film's climax features a heart-wrenching moment where the men finally locate a rescue ship on the horizon and, with hope renewed, they prepare themselves for rescue - not knowing if there will be anyone to claim them. In the final scenes, the three survivors are pulled from the water, exhausted, but very much alive, their ordeal a testament to their resilience in the face of war and adversity. As the survivors of the U.S.S. Bunker Hill later reported their story, the rescue occurred on September 28, 1942, after being afloat in the Pacific for 41 days, a feat of endurance that defied the odds of war.
