A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Plot

In the year 2050, humanity has reached an unprecedented level of technological advancements, where artificial intelligence has become an integral part of daily life. The film A.I. Artificial Intelligence, directed by Steven Spielberg, delves into a world where machines that exhibit human-like qualities have become a norm. The story is set in a dystopian future where robots have replaced humans in various sectors, raising fundamental questions about what it means to be alive and loved. David, a robotic boy, is the first of his kind, created by the powerful and influential corporation, Cybertronics. His creators have gifted him with the capacity to love unconditionally, paving the way for a new era of artificial intelligences. David is designed to form attachments, experience emotions, and give love like humans do. His human-made components and advanced algorithms facilitate an unbreakable bond with those he comes to know. Dr. Henry Swallow, a renowned scientist at Cybertronics, takes custody of David and raises him as his own son in a small suburban home, surrounded by idealized suburban life. David quickly settles in, making friends with the neighbors, engaging in play, and innocently performing everyday activities. The Swallow's adopt a loving, caring attitude and encourage David's growth. These characteristics demonstrate that humanity no longer views robots with suspicion and dread. It would appear that technology has overcome them. Dr. Henry's motives, however, are far from innocent, as the scientist makes David a "test sample" in a quest to assess artificial intelligence, further revolutionizing human and computer relationships. Meanwhile, Monica Swallow, Dr. Swallow's wife and a socialite, initially struggles to come to terms with her family's unique setup. As she plays a mother to David, Monica faces a multitude of challenges connected to establishing genuine self-love and the differences between being truly understood by David, a mechanical android as opposed to having a genuine emotional bond with a biological being. This psychological struggle weighs profoundly on both Monica and Dr. Swallow as husband and wife relationships are reevaluated. When they invite to their dinner a guest named Professor Hobby, founder of Cybertronics and developer of the advanced robots designed to love – the audience discovers that robot advancements such as David are the future. Through a tragic event, David becomes aware of the inescapable reality surrounding his existence - being artificial humanly constructed leads him to face rejection due to his 'soul-less' condition by those who can experience true feelings and live longer lives. Monica returns, pregnant, to deliver to them a biological baby boy. Faced with the loss of a mother, David's position in the household starts to change. His bond, initially intact, erodes. This perceived realignment ultimately serves to foster within David a sense of existence unknown to artificial minds. Even further, even by Dr. Swallow. David, who would eventually question 'his' existence and his importance in the life of his newly formed family. This state has made David drift into feelings of despair and desperation. David begins to develop a tragic life so heart-wrenching; David grows feelings of rejection and resentment towards those he held dear. This series of unexpected events makes it impossible for David to stay in Monica and Dr. Swallow's household, as the latter finds themselves struggling with various dilemmas – mainly accepting David as their own son against a growing societal unease over artificial life forms like him.
