"And the Sun Rises" revolves around Nika's tumultuous life in a crumbling suburban house near Tbilisi, Georgia. Nika finds himself shouldering the sole responsibility of caring for his father, Sandro, who has been confined to a bed due to a paralyzing condition. The strain of his caregiving duties is compounded by Sandro's abusive nature, which has left Nika emotionally scarred. Despite the difficult circumstances, Nika's relationships with his father are fraught with complexity. While Sandro's malice has created a toxic atmosphere in the household, Nika's devotion to his father is undeniable. This enigmatic dynamic between Nika and Sandro serves as the backbone of the narrative, underscoring the intricacies of their strained bond. The arrival of Nastya, Nika's girlfriend, brings an element of unpredictability to the story. Unbeknownst to Nika, Nastya has been following him from afar, her actions driven by a deep-seated concern for his well-being. The tension between Nika's desire to keep his life separate from Nastya and the reality of her presence, however uninvited, sets the stage for a confrontation that has been long overdue. Sandro, sensing an opportunity to manipulate the situation to his advantage, seizes upon Nastya's arrival as a means to exert his influence over Nika. Utilizing his trademark cunning, Sandro subtly manipulates Nika's emotions, sowing seeds of fear, doubt, and insecurity. With each passing moment, it becomes increasingly clear that Sandro's primary goal is to sabotage Nika's relationship with Nastya, ensuring that Nika remains bound to him. As tensions escalate, the fragile balance in the household begins to unravel. The presence of Nastya serves as a catalyst, forcing Nika to confront the deep-seated emotions that have been brewing beneath the surface. With his grip on reality beginning to slip, Nika is left grappling with feelings of helplessness, anger, and a deep-seated need for control. Meanwhile, the looming prospect of the family home being sold casts a dark cloud over the narrative, underscoring the instability and impermanence of the characters' lives. This external threat serves as a harsh metaphor, illuminating the fragile nature of their relationships, and the difficulties they face in escaping the suffocating grasp of Sandro's influence. Throughout the narrative, the relationship between Nika and Sandro is meticulously explored, revealing the intricate web of emotions that binds them together. As Nika struggles to come to terms with his past and reconcile his feelings towards his father, the boundaries between reality and fiction begin to blur, creating an atmosphere of intense emotional tension. The character of Sandro, in particular, stands out as a pivotal force in the narrative, whose influence is both captivating and repulsive in equal measure. What resonates most are the music, the vibrant color palette, the intriguing plot, and the fluidly rotating camera work. It's a magical, uniquely subjective, impressionistic tale steeped in nostalgia.
