Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead

Plot

When the undead took over Las Vegas, nobody thought it would be possible to find anything of value in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The city that once thrived on excess and illusion had turned into a desolate nightmare where the few remaining survivors struggled to stay alive. However, Scott Ward, a former mercenary, received an unexpected phone call from an old friend and old associate, Martin. Ward, an ex-marine, had made a name for himself as one of the top extraction specialists in his unit, but he had long since put that life behind him. Years of working as a security guard for a gated community on the outskirts of Las Vegas had changed him. He had grown complacent and had given up on the high-stakes world of mercenaries. Martin, however, had other plans for him. Las Vegas has become a zombie paradise, but with its thousands of attractions and entertainment venues, the city offers an incredible opportunity for the taking. Ward was approached by Martin, who was now teaming up with a mysterious new investor to organize a daring heist to retrieve a large sum of gold and cash from a vault in a local skyscraper, as long as they agreed to venture into the heart of the zombie-infested city without the permission of the authorities. The team's initial reluctance to this offer was immediately replaced with curiosity as Martin confirmed the abundance of resources in the area. He revealed that a large sum, reportedly upwards of $200 million, had been left undisturbed and untouched during the outbreak. Martin also mentioned rumors of the presence of Russian mercenaries and rogue units trying to secure the cash for their own gain. There were rumors of at least 20,000 Russian troops who had got contaminated in an exchange for arms. Although these 2 opposing groups came forward with high expectations regarding their worth and strategic power in a battle against the zombies, everyone realized their high expectations cannot match those for one another, as there's only spot for one side in this adventure. Ward agrees under one condition: the team has to be comprised of his favorite extraction specialists – his crew. He gathered his skilled group, which includes: Maria, his former combat-avant-garde associate; Ludert, an artist with extraordinary driving skills; Dieter, an army veteran and skilled gun user; and Katina, a master hacker from Eastern Europe. They quickly all acknowledged that this attempt may be their last. Ward warned them that venturing into the quarantine zone was a risk, as the slightest mishap could occur. After agreeing on their terms and assessing their chances, they were handed stacks of tactical high-tech outfits designed by Hennigan, the world-renowned designer for mercenaries. Martin's friend Burt had organized this business and took on a financial mission to gather the resources and planning for the op. The once optimistic Las Vegas now seemed to be cursed with terrifying zombie zombies roaming and devouring all that remains after their chaotic assault - transforming the location from a city one came to dance to, to its current form looking more like - broken dusts destroyed and rusted. Their fearless crew was both focused on an adrenaline-packed journey and ready to make some unforgettable memories. As Ward made some final thoughts before leading what initially seemed like an amateurish ambush throughout the street, they each geared up to traverse the zone which used to be the notorious but fabulous neon-filled Las Vegas. Once they had the mission objective clear in their minds, they headed into the heart of the outbreak and stepped into the quarantine zone without considering their doomsday-like reputation - the mere chance of attempting to rescue an object hidden in the ruins of civilization.

The Cranberries on the end credits? Yes, please! Within the Netflix action movie landscape, this one is genuinely pretty good. While the pacing does drag in places, it delivers several satisfying action sequences, and, like the previous film, leaves things open-ended. Ultimately, at its core it's about the father-daughter relationship – you've got to give Zack Snyder credit for that.

A Two-Dimensional, Deeply Sentimental Look Back: Zack, wounded by the studio system, returns to the genre that marked his entry into the world of cinema. The pain of losing a daughter transforms into Bautista's guilt, regret, and redemption within the film – a journey that's explosively brutal yet intensely private and profound. The opening slow-motion montage remains his most captivating narrative signature, a perfect symbol of his visual fetishism – bullets roaring from gun barrels culminating in the film's ultimate, definitive moment. He hasn't lost himself. Regarding the innovation in zombie films, compared to the anti-authoritarian humor Romero infused into *Dawn of the Dead*, the primal, classical tragic aura enveloping the zombies in this film doesn't quite break new ground...

What I thought would be Zack Snyder's unbridled zombie action flick after escaping the constraints of big studios (and it does have plenty of detailed expansions on zombie lore) turned out to be a deeply emotional and intimate piece filled with longing for his late daughter and a father's self-reproach. No wonder Snyder took on the cinematography himself this time. It's quite romantic when you think about it.
