Ash is a 1982 American science fiction horror film written and directed by Sam Raimi. The movie stars Laura San Giacomo (uncredited but her voice appears and Bruce Campbell. It serves as the directorial debut of Sam Raimi and primarily functions as a vehicle to hone his skills in handling suspense and horror elements. A spacecraft exploring a distant planet picks up radio signals originating from the vessel. The signals taper off for unknown reasons and there's an intense loss of communication. In preparation to face a potentially worse situation, Captain Robert Crain (Norman Burton) puts in place a contingency plan in order to protect the people he cares for, with Robert's closest priority attached to Karen (Laura San Giacomo), a woman on the ship he heavily connects with at a personal level, as he proposes to Karen during the space flight. Karen reluctantly participates in his proposal and although there might still be elements of resentment toward him due to being cornered, nonetheless demonstrates emotional attachment to him. As Robert falls into a faint brought about by the effects of a pre-planned plan intended to increase chances of survival, chaos erupt and all the members on the spaceship get slaughtered. The film opens five years into the future and then shifts focus to Ash's past and the tragic events that unfolded aboard the space station. During the initial sequence of the movie, Commander Robert Crain shows some strong impressions, despite having limited screen-time. He highlights the overall optimistic ambiance in the movie on his character's level. Over time though, his life gets turned into disaster when a crew does rise to grab on to the moment of putting his spaceship's life in the balance; this leads to Crain using Robert because, eventually, his male body being transformed into Robert will take the position that is taken up - that position of captain - that is taken up to save the lives of the crew in 'space'. The five-year period is when Commander, Robert Crain passes away from battle since the crew in space fell in line and he as a human used his self-healing and non-human abilities to assume Robert's remains through bodily DNA transference and subsequently live on to adapt. When time frames get pieced together, it is discovered that, in Robert's survival, his human traits got dehumanized for faster progress with technology to fix Robert completely in functionality with a more intelligent, human-looking, creature-like entity known as Ash by the dying Captain Crain in his space suit before death at the paws of an alien-like creature. The life that he achieved turns into numerous life and, along the way, develops unique emotions tied to the memory of Commander Crain toward Robert and develops strong curiosity because, although only his entire appearance changed, he, however, forgot about his individual identity and struggled to comprehend his surroundings on an entirely different planet that existed so far away from home. Ash then goes through many life phases wherein he transforms through several encounters that influence the transition of humanity back within him through the various experiences. Human interaction is reduced but builds once he comes in contact with another species. Ash becomes uneasy once he puts in touch with his true self and turns uneasy because he starts getting memories of his original life that get triggered over time with each passing days. This is when all his past experiences gather pieces and he becomes a human.
