Plot

Asura: The City of Madness is a South Korean neo-noir crime thriller film released in 2016, directed by Kim Min-oh. The movie takes place in the dark and crime-ridden city of Seoul, where corruption has become a norm in the higher echelons of power. The story revolves around Park Deok-hee (played by Ha Jung-woo), a hard-boiled and seasoned detective who has seen it all. Deok-hee is a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Service's Homicide Unit, but he has a reputation for being one of the most honest and straightforward officers in the force. The movie begins with Deok-hee being assigned to investigate the murder of a key government official. However, things soon take a turn when Deok-hee discovers that the official's death is linked to a larger conspiracy involving the city's corrupt mayor and the powerful police chief. As Deok-hee digs deeper, he realizes that he has stumbled into a hornet's nest and that his life is now in danger. Deok-hee's investigation attracts the attention of Internal Affairs, who are also investigating a string of police bribes and corruption. The Internal Affairs team is led by the ambitious and cunning Detective Lee (played by Sung Ji-ru), who sees Deok-hee's involvement as a threat to his own ambitions. Lee and his team start to scrutinize Deok-hee's actions, questioning his motives and loyalty to the force. Meanwhile, Deok-hee becomes embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with the city's corrupt mayor and the ruthless gangster boss, Lee Jung-hyun, who is pulling the strings from behind the scenes. The mayor, who is desperate to cover up the corruption, offers Deok-hee a deal: in exchange for his silence and cooperation, Deok-hee will be given a promotion and a chance to start anew. As Deok-hee navigates this treacherous landscape, he is forced to confront his own demons and make impossible choices. His obsession with justice and his desire to protect his colleagues and loved ones drive him to walk the thin line between right and wrong. The movie's title, Asura, refers to the mythical creature in Hindu and Buddhist mythology that is associated with chaos and disorder. This title is fitting for the movie's themes of corruption, greed, and the breakdown of societal norms. Throughout the movie, Deok-hee's character undergoes significant development, showing the toll of his experiences on his mental and physical health. Ha Jung-woo's portrayal of Deok-hee is outstanding, conveying the complexity and vulnerability of the character. The supporting cast, particularly Sung Ji-ru and Cha Seung-won, deliver strong performances that add depth to the movie's narrative. As the story unfolds, Deok-hee finds himself at the center of a maelstrom of chaos and corruption. His world is turned upside down, and he is forced to confront the darkest aspects of human nature. In a thrilling climax, Deok-hee must make a choice between his loyalty to his colleagues and his duty to uphold justice. The movie's themes of corruption, power, and the decay of society are timely and thought-provoking. Asura: The City of Madness is a gripping and intense thriller that delivers a scathing critique of systemic corruption and police brutality. The movie's dark and gritty tone, coupled with its thought-provoking themes, make it a standout among other neo-noir crime thrillers.
